Nübel’s surge puts him in the frame

For Thomas Helmer, the answer starts in Istanbul. And it has a name.

"Looking at it right now: Nübel, who is playing sensationally in Istanbul and simply has match practice, is certainly a candidate," the former Bayern defender and Euro 1996 winner told Sport1.

Alexander Nübel has rebuilt his reputation at Besiktas. Six clean sheets in his first nine competitive games since leaving Bayern Munich have done more than any press release ever could. He is playing, he is winning, and he is being noticed.

Yet even Helmer, clearly impressed, refuses to call the race early. He still talks about a "big question" when it comes to Neuer’s true heir. Because this is not just about form. It is about status, trust, and the weight of a shirt worn for a decade by one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time.

Life after Neuer

Neuer’s last act with the national team only underlines the scale of the void. For his short-term return aimed at the 2026 World Cup, he reclaimed the No. 1 spot from Oliver Baumann. Then he walked away for good.

Now Klopp inherits a depth chart without its fixed point. Behind Neuer, a group of contenders has been circling for years. Many experts have long seen Jonas Urbig as the man Bayern are grooming for the future. He travelled to the World Cup as a training goalkeeper, working alongside Neuer, Baumann and Nübel, but did not make the official tournament squad.

That kind of apprenticeship looks good on a CV. It does not, on its own, win you the Germany shirt.

Urbig’s dilemma

Helmer, for one, is unconvinced that Urbig is ready to make the leap from prospect to national-team starter.

"The question is how much playing time he will really get under Vincent Kompany," he said, pointing straight at the heart of the issue. So far, the answer is sobering: "Just one cup game against Osnabrück for now – and I don't mean that disrespectfully at all – certainly won't be enough."

Bayern have repeatedly stressed that Urbig will get his minutes behind first-choice goalkeeper Neuer. That might suit a long-term club plan. It does not, in Helmer’s eyes, match the urgency of Germany’s needs.

"In the goalkeeping position, you need someone who plays all the time," he insisted. Match rhythm, not potential, is the currency that counts.

Ter Stegen waiting in the wings

Amid the focus on Nübel’s rise and Urbig’s promise, one name hovers over the debate: Marc-André ter Stegen. Long seen as the eternal understudy, the Barcelona keeper could find the door to a DFB comeback opening wider than ever in the new era.

Klopp’s first squad will reveal how he weighs all of this: Nübel’s form in Istanbul, Urbig’s lack of minutes, the experience of established names. The Neuer era is over. The shirt is vacant.

Now someone has to be brave enough to claim it.
