Ghana’s President Warns of Talent Drain in Football

John Dramani Mahama has sounded a clear alarm over the state of Ghanaian football, warning that the rapid export of young players is stripping the domestic game of its lifeblood.

Speaking on September 8, 2026, at Jubilee House during a meeting with Nations FC, Medeama SC and Ampem Darkoa Ladies, the president laid out a blunt assessment: Ghana’s league is losing its edge because its brightest prospects barely get time to grow at home.

“We Lose Them Too Early”

Mahama pointed to a familiar pattern. A teenager breaks through, strings together a few standout performances, and almost immediately lands on the radar of scouts. Before local fans can truly claim him as their own, he is gone.

According to the president, this conveyor belt of early exits is steadily lowering the standard of the domestic championship. The league, he argued, is being denied the chance to mature its own stars, season after season.

He stressed that Ghana is surrendering its young talent far too soon and urged stakeholders to find ways to keep promising players in the national league for longer spells. For him, the solution starts at home: give them time, give them games, give them responsibility.

National Team as a Finishing School

Mahama also pushed a bolder idea: use the national team as a platform to harden these prospects before they move abroad.

He suggested that promising players should be given opportunities with the national side to gain exposure to international football while still rooted in the local system. That experience, he believes, can act as a crucial bridge between raw potential and fully formed professionals.

In his view, a stint with the national team would allow these footballers to reach a more mature stage of development before they catch the eye of international or local scouts and secure moves overseas. The message was clear: let Ghanaian football shape its own stars before the rest of the world comes calling.
