Greg Docherty Departs Charlton After Promotion Season

Charlton Athletic have parted company with captain Greg Docherty by mutual consent, drawing a swift line under the midfielder’s short but influential spell at The Valley.

Docherty only arrived in south London in July 2024, yet immediately became the heartbeat of Nathan Jones’ side, wearing the armband and driving the Addicks to promotion from League One in his debut campaign.

He racked up 90 appearances in Charlton colours and scored five goals, but now departs as a free agent and can join a new club outside the transfer window.

For Docherty, the role clearly meant more than a title on a teamsheet.

“To be named captain of such an iconic football club was nothing short of a privilege,” the 29-year-old told Charlton’s website. He spoke of feeling the “weight and expectation” that came with the armband, and of pouring “absolute all” into representing the club “every single day” through “the good and the bad moments”.

“I'll always be grateful for my time at Charlton and everything the club has given me, but football moves fast and I'm now excited to see what the future holds,” he added.

The Scot’s final outing for the club came in last week’s Carabao Cup defeat at Tottenham Hotspur, a low-key ending to a year in which his influence had been anything but.

Docherty arrived with a wealth of experience behind him, having previously turned out for Hamilton, Rangers, Hull, Shrewsbury and Hibernian. At Charlton, that background translated into authority in the dressing room and reliability on the pitch.

Jones was quick to underline that impact.

“He's a leader, an unbelievable pro and he should take his rightful place in the history of Charlton Athletic,” the manager said.

The decision, though, was rooted in where Charlton want to go next. Ambition has a cost.

“The tough thing is, we want to evolve, we want to improve on every level and it meant that Doc's game time was probably going to be more limited than he wanted,” Jones explained. Honest talks followed. Both sides agreed a clean break was the best route.

Charlton now push ahead with their evolution. Docherty goes in search of his next challenge, leaving behind promotion, an armband, and a standard for whoever leads the Addicks out next.
