Hafiz Gariba's Future at Barcelona: Hansi Flick's Decision
Barcelona’s defensive cupboard looks worryingly bare, but one name will not be pulled off the academy shelf just yet.
Barça Universal, via information from Adrian Sanchez, report that Hansi Flick does not currently see Hafiz Gariba as a realistic option for the first team, despite the club heading into a demanding 2026/27 season with limited depth at centre-back.
It is a firm call on a player who has been gathering momentum inside the club.
A prospect on the fast track
Since arriving at Barcelona, Gariba has quickly built a reputation as one of the most intriguing young defenders in the system.
The club tied him down in February 2025 with a three-year contract running to 2028, a clear sign of faith in his potential. Coaches have been encouraged by his development since then, noting both his physical profile and his defensive instincts.
Gariba first came onto the radar at Escuela Marcet, where his performances drew interest from several major Spanish clubs. Barcelona won that particular race and brought him in on a long-term project.
His strengths are obvious. An imposing frame that lets him recover ground when attackers think they have escaped. A sharp reading of the game that allows him to step in, cut out passes, and intercept danger before it fully forms.
In Catalonia, he has become a regular for the Juvenil A side and continues to impress staff with that blend of power and anticipation. Inside the academy, the trajectory feels upward.
The door to the next level, though, has not opened.
A missed pre-season window
This summer was supposed to be his chance.
With the 2026/27 campaign looming and the first-team squad light at centre-back, there was genuine optimism that Gariba might be drafted into pre-season work with Flick’s group. His name was firmly in the conversation for senior training and minutes.
Then illness intervened. A fever kept him out and ruled him unavailable for the friendly against CE Europa. The window that might have showcased him to the new coach simply never materialised.
As Barcelona’s lack of options at the heart of defence became more obvious, Gariba’s name naturally resurfaced as a possible internal solution. On paper, it made sense: a highly rated academy defender, under contract, physically ready, and progressing well.
On the pitch board in Flick’s office, it does not. Not yet.
From the information available, that tentative idea of promoting him has not turned into a real pathway under the German coach for the time being.
Flick’s hierarchy is set
The picture at centre-back is clear in Flick’s mind.
Pau Cubarsi, Andreas Christensen and Gerard Martin are the recognised central defenders currently available. Jules Kounde can also slot into the middle, but Flick is primarily using the Frenchman at full-back.
For a club facing a long, intense season, that is a thin group. Which is why Gariba’s status is so striking. His progress has been strong enough to draw attention inside the club, his profile fits what the position demands, and his contract secures him for the medium term.
Yet Flick is not prepared to lean on him at senior level right now.
The message is blunt but simple: Hafiz Gariba is one for the future, not for the crisis. The question is how long Barcelona can afford to keep it that way.
