Hansi Flick's Bold Barcelona Teamsheet for Season Opener
Hansi Flick’s first Barcelona teamsheet of the season leaves no room for doubt: reputations can wait, ideas come first.
For the opener against Elche CF this evening, the German coach has backed youth, flexibility and a few bold calls that will echo far beyond one August night.
Bold at the back
The tone was set even before the XI dropped. Alejandro Balde, Marc Casado and Hector Fort were all left out of the initial squad list, a clear early marker from Flick.
Now the lineup confirms it. Xavi Espart, tipped hours before kick-off, does indeed start and is set to patrol the left flank. New arrival Joao Cancelo, one of the headline signings of the summer, has to settle for a place on the bench.
On the opposite side, Eric Garcia is handed the right-back role, while Andreas Christensen and Gerard Martin form the central pairing. It’s a back line that blends experience, audition and a hint of risk, and it will be judged quickly in a season opener where any slip is magnified.
Midfield with a point to prove
In midfield, another youngster gets his chance. Marc Bernal starts and will be asked to steady the game’s rhythm, sitting at the base and linking play.
Ahead of him, the energy and incision come from Gavi and Fermin Lopez. Both are aggressive, front-foot players, and their presence either side of Bernal points to a Barcelona intent on playing high and fast rather than easing their way into the campaign.
If Flick wanted a safety-first first night, this is not it.
Adeyemi through the middle
Up front, the headline is clear. New signing Karim Adeyemi leads the line, but not as a classic striker. Flick has entrusted him with the false nine role, dropping between the lines to drag defenders out and open spaces for the wide men.
To his right, Lamine Yamal starts, another vote of confidence in a teenager already carrying serious expectations. On the left, Raphinha provides the direct threat and end product, cutting inside and attacking the box.
It is a front three built for speed, movement and chaos, not for standing still and waiting for service.
Firepower on the bench
If the starting XI is adventurous, the bench offers a second wave that could change the game’s tone completely.
Anthony Gordon, another new signing, waits for his debut minutes and looks a prime candidate to enter after the break, especially if the match opens up. Cancelo, Pedri and Jules Kounde are also in reserve, giving Flick the option to reshape almost every line in the second half.
One more name lingers in the background. Hamza Abdelkarim, who has generated plenty of buzz, is available as a more traditional number nine option. Should Barcelona need a different kind of presence in the box, the door is open for him to step into the spotlight.
For a first competitive XI, Flick has chosen statement over safety. Now the question is simple: will this brave blueprint launch Barcelona’s season, or force an early rethink?
