Harry Kane Named Germany’s Player of the Year 2026

BERLIN — Harry Kane’s first full chapter in German football just added its defining line: Germany’s Player of the Year 2026.

The Bayern Munich striker was voted the standout performer in the country after a staggering season in which he scored 61 goals across all competitions, including the German Supercup. His goals powered Bayern to another Bundesliga title, a German Cup triumph, and yet another Supercup to open the new campaign.

He didn’t even need to score in the latest showpiece. On Saturday, Bayern beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the German Supercup, with Kane leading the line and helping secure more silverware without adding to his personal tally. The body of work was already overwhelming.

The annual poll, organized by Kicker magazine and decided by 659 members of the Association of German Sports Journalists (VDS), turned into a clear verdict. Kane collected 272 votes, comfortably ahead of Bayern teammate Michael Olise, who finished second with 203.

Behind them, the field thinned out quickly. Deniz Undav picked up 61 votes, while Bayern’s Joshua Kimmich received 21 and Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann 14. Kicker reported three invalid ballots.

On the touchline, Vincent Kompany’s impact was rewarded just as emphatically. The Bayern coach claimed nearly half of all votes for the Coach of the Year award, finishing ahead of Freiburg’s Julian Schuster, last year’s winner. Kompany’s first season in charge of the Bavarian giants ended with a domestic double and now a prestigious personal honor to match.

Florian Wirtz had taken the Player of the Year award last year. This time, the spotlight shifted decisively to Munich and to Kane, whose debut season numbers placed him among the most devastating forwards the German game has seen.

The awards themselves carry weight. The Player of the Year title has been handed out since 1960, while coaches have been honored since 2002. The roll of honor is a who’s who of German football: Franz Beckenbauer leads the player category with four wins, while Jürgen Klopp and Felix Magath top the coaching list with three awards each.

Kane and Kompany now join that lineage. The question is no longer whether they belong there. It’s how long they plan on staying.
