Harvey Elliott's Liverpool Exit Looms as Valencia Move Nears
Harvey Elliott’s Liverpool career is edging towards the exit door, with the midfielder close to a move to Valencia after slipping out of Andoni Iraola’s plans at Anfield.
Left out of the matchday squad against Newcastle less than a week ago, Elliott watched on as youngsters Lewis Koumas and James McConnell were preferred. For a 23-year-old once tipped as a long-term pillar of Liverpool’s future, it felt like a decisive moment.
Elliott returned to Liverpool in the summer after a bruising loan spell at Aston Villa that never really caught fire. Rather than a fresh start, he walked back into a squad where his status had changed and his pathway had narrowed.
Iraola did not hide the reality when asked about leaving Elliott and Luke Chambers out before the Nottingham Forest game.
“With Harvey, with [Luke] Chambers, with some of the players that I decided – because I can only choose 20 – to leave out, it’s a matter of finding the balance on the bench,” he said. “In Harvey’s case, he’s trying, he’s improving every week, but I still prefer other options.
“Probably I was in doubt with James McConnell in terms of getting into the squad, and I decided to put James in the squad. But it’s another new week, new chances for everyone, and they have to keep that mentality.”
The message was clear. Elliott is working, but others are ahead of him.
Off the pitch, the situation has moved quickly. It has been widely reported that Elliott has agreed personal terms with Valencia after positive talks, with only the structure of the deal still to be decided. A loan has not been ruled out, but with the midfielder entering the final 12 months of his Liverpool contract, a permanent transfer currently looks the more logical outcome.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that Valencia have opened negotiations with Liverpool as they push for a club-to-club agreement.
Elliott’s slide down the pecking order began last summer with the arrival of Florian Wirtz, whose presence has locked down one of the creative roles Elliott might once have targeted. Any lingering hope of reinventing himself out wide has also faded, with Bradley Barcola on his way to bolster Liverpool’s options in the attacking lanes.
From highly touted prospect to squad omission and now the brink of a move abroad, Elliott stands at a crossroads. Valencia are ready to offer a reset. The question is whether Liverpool are ready to let go for good.
