Harvey Elliott in Loan Talks with Valencia
Liverpool are in talks with Valencia over a loan move for Harvey Elliott as the transfer window ticks towards Tuesday night’s deadline.
The Spanish club have emerged at the front of the queue after a summer of interest from several sides, with negotiations now under way ahead of the 11pm cut-off on September 1. Valencia see the attacking midfielder as a key addition and are pushing to get a deal in place in the final days of the window.
Elliott, 23, is understood to have already spoken with Valencia head coach Carlos Corberan about his prospective role at Mestalla. The conversation has given the La Liga side confidence they can persuade him to make the switch, with the promise of regular football central to their pitch.
Any agreement is expected to be a straight loan, but it could feed into a longer-term plan at Anfield. Liverpool are open to the move and a successful spell in Spain may prompt the club to explore a contract extension to protect the value of a player whose current deal runs to the summer of 2028.
Right now, Elliott finds himself on the outside looking in. He has yet to make a match-day squad under new Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola, a stark contrast to the early optimism that followed his breakthrough years at Anfield.
Last season brought frustration too. Elliott spent the campaign at Aston Villa but barely featured. A late cameo in Liverpool’s 3-2 win at Newcastle a year ago locked him into two clubs for the season and blocked any further January move, leaving him stuck in a loan that never really ignited.
Villa, for their part, were careful. His contract contained an obligation to buy if he reached 10 appearances, a clause that would have triggered a permanent £35m transfer. The Midlands club steered well clear of that threshold. While Unai Emery’s side went on to lift the Europa League, Elliott watched most of it from the fringes.
He returned to Liverpool in the summer and travelled on the pre-season tour of the United States, but even then his future felt uncertain. Speaking in New York after a 1-0 win over Wrexham on July 30, he laid bare the dilemma facing him.
“I think I need to be more kind of cautious of my decisions,” he said. “Ultimately, I'm still wanting to be selfish, within that aspect of doing what's right for me, and whether I'm staying here and fighting for my place, or whether that's potentially going elsewhere, I'm still unsure at this moment in time until I get some more intel."
Liverpool, expecting contact from Valencia before the weekend, are now deep into discussions as the clock runs down. For a player who joined his boyhood club from Fulham in the summer of 2019 and has already made 149 appearances, the next few days could define the next chapter of his career.
