Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg Stripped of Marseille Captaincy Amid Newcastle Transfer Drama

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has been stripped of the Marseille captaincy after refusing a move to Newcastle United, triggering a power struggle behind the scenes at the Ligue 1 club.

The midfielder, targeted by Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle as a replacement for Bruno Guimaraes, has made it clear he does not want the switch to St James' Park. That stance has infuriated Marseille owner Frank McCourt, who had been ready to cash in.

Newcastle were prepared to do business at around £15 million and sporting director Ross Wilson has been driving the pursuit, but with Hojbjerg unwilling, the deal has stalled and now looks dead.

The fallout has been immediate. Marseille have already handed the armband to Timothy Weah, even though Hojbjerg kept his place in the starting XI against Atletico Madrid and completed the match.

The decision to demote Hojbjerg has not come from the dugout. It has come from upstairs.

Marseille head coach Bruno Genesio did not hide his frustration when he faced the media after Friday’s game.

"It is a decision that was dictated to me by the club's management," he said. "If I want to be completely frank, and I will be, it is not a decision that I agree with.

"But I am an employee, I have to comply with certain obligations. We did it."

So the captaincy has gone, the relationship between player and hierarchy looks strained, and the transfer that was meant to solve problems for both clubs is off the table.

Newcastle, needing a new midfield anchor after Guimaraes’ exit, now have to pivot. Chasing a player who has no desire to join them is a non-starter.

Attention has already moved to Joao Palhinha. The Magpies have put a three-year contract on the table for the Bayern Munich midfielder, hoping his Premier League experience can plug the gap.

There is another snag. Palhinha’s preference is Aston Villa, leaving Newcastle again in the position of trying to tempt a target whose heart is set elsewhere.

Marseille are left with a key midfielder who no longer wears the armband. Newcastle are still searching for their next leader in the middle of the pitch. One club has made its power play; the other must now find an answer.
