Hull City Break Transfer Record to Sign Nobel Mendy

Hull City have torn up their own transfer history to land Nobel Mendy, completing a club-record deal for the highly rated Rayo Vallecano centre-back.

The 21-year-old Senegal international has signed a five-year contract at the MKM Stadium, with the option of a further year, as Hull double down on an ambitious summer rebuild.

The fee remains officially undisclosed, but the club confirmed it eclipses the £20m plus add-ons paid earlier this month for Greece goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis from Olympiacos. That makes Mendy the most expensive signing in Hull’s history, surpassing a record that had stood since 2016, when £13m brought Ryan Mason from Tottenham.

This is a statement, not a routine addition.

“I am very happy to be here and very proud to be here as well,” Mendy said after the move was confirmed. “I am a very athletic player, and I am a defender at heart. I also really enjoy the game and coming out from the back cleanly and aggressively when needed.

“I have wanted to play in the Premier League since I was little, so it's a great challenge to face and I am ready for it.”

Born in Senegal and developed in France, Mendy came through at Paris FC before stepping onto the Spanish stage. He spent last season in La Liga with Rayo Vallecano, where he scored twice in 28 appearances and grew into one of the league’s more eye-catching young defenders.

His final outing for Rayo came on a painful night: defeat to Crystal Palace in the Conference League final. It was a familiar feeling. The year before, he had also reached the same competition’s final with Real Betis, only to lose to Chelsea.

Back-to-back European finals at 21. No trophy, but plenty of evidence he can handle high-stakes occasions.

On the international front, Mendy has one senior cap for Senegal, earned in March against The Gambia. That debut hinted at a long-term role with his national team; Hull are betting heavily that his club trajectory will climb just as sharply.

The Premier League dream he talked about is now real. The question is simple: can Hull’s record signing turn that dream into a defensive cornerstone for a club intent on pushing its own limits?
