Ibrahima Konaté Joins Real Madrid After Leaving Liverpool

Ibrahima Konaté is about to swap the Kop for the Bernabéu – and his next contract shows exactly how highly Real Madrid rate him.

The 27-year-old defender, who left Liverpool on a free transfer at the end of the 2025/26 season, is closing in on a move to the Spanish giants after months of uncertainty over his future. What once looked like a routine renewal at Anfield has turned into one of the biggest free-agent deals of the summer.

A Renewal That Never Arrived

Back in April, Liverpool and Konaté appeared to be on the brink of an agreement. Fabrizio Romano reported that talks had advanced into the final stages and that both sides were close to a new contract. Inside the club, there was confidence. This was supposed to be a formality.

Liverpool wanted him to stay. GMS sources indicate the club were prepared to hand Konaté a pay rise that reflected his status in the squad. Konaté, for his part, was open to committing his peak years to Anfield – but only if his demands were met.

The negotiations stalled. Neither side moved enough. Optimism drained away, and by the end of the season Liverpool announced that Konaté would leave when his deal expired, walking away for nothing after five years on Merseyside.

Just like that, one of Europe’s most coveted central defenders hit the market as a free agent.

Madrid Move and a Huge Contract

Real Madrid had been circling for some time. Konaté had long been linked with the club, and once it became clear he would not renew at Liverpool, the path opened.

Earlier this week, Romano revealed that an agreement had been reached: Konaté has signed a four-year contract with Madrid. The length of the deal underlines the club’s faith in him as a long-term piece of their back line.

The numbers behind that contract are striking. Spanish journalist Eduardo Inda reported that Konaté was seeking a €20 million signing bonus and a net salary of €12 million per season. Anfield Watch calculated that package at roughly £400,000 per week before tax.

El Desmarque now report that Real Madrid have accepted those terms. His wage will sit in line with David Alaba’s, the Austrian defender who also arrived in Madrid on a free from Bayern Munich in 2021 and immediately became one of the best-paid defenders in Europe.

For Konaté, the leap is enormous. At Liverpool, he was earning around £150,000 per week, according to Goal. Madrid are effectively more than doubling that figure. A free transfer for the club, a mammoth pay rise for the player.

Five Years, Five Trophies, One Farewell

Konaté does not leave Anfield as a footnote. He departs as a central figure in a successful era.

Across five seasons, he made 183 appearances for Liverpool, scoring seven goals and helping the club lift five trophies, including the Premier League title in 2025. He grew from promising signing into cornerstone, from squad option into one of the leaders of the back line.

When his exit became official, Konaté chose his own platform to say goodbye. On Instagram, he posted a long, emotional message to the club and its supporters.

“Representing this club has been an honour. We’ve shared incredible moments together… highs and lows, trophies, challenges, lifelong friendships, and heartbreaking moments that will stay with us forever, none more painful than losing our brother Diogo.

“Losing my father this year was one of the hardest periods of my life, but even through hardship, my commitment to this club never changed. During the toughest moments, I gave everything I had for this badge.

“To my teammates, coaches, staff and everyone behind the scenes, thank you for helping me grow every single day. And to the supporters… thank you for your love, your energy, and your incredible support. Anfield is truly a special place, and playing in front of you was something I never took for granted.

“I am deeply saddened that I didn’t get the chance to say goodbye to all of you at the last game. At that moment, I didn’t know it would be my final time wearing this shirt in front of you.

“From the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything. I love you all and will carry Liverpool with me wherever I go. This isn’t an easy goodbye, but it’s time for a new challenge and a new chapter.”

It read like a player closing a cherished chapter, but not turning his back on it.

A New Chapter in the Bernabéu Spotlight

Now comes that new chapter. A four-year contract at Real Madrid, a salary to match the elite, and the expectation that he will anchor the defence at one of the most demanding clubs in world football.

Liverpool lose a defender in his prime for nothing. Madrid gain one without paying a fee, but commit to wages and a signing bonus that place Konaté among the highest earners in his position.

For Konaté, the stakes are clear. He leaves behind the comfort and adoration of Anfield for the relentless scrutiny of the Bernabéu. The money is huge. The stage is bigger.

The only question now is whether he can turn this lucrative move into the defining stretch of his career.
