Inter's Bid for Tottenham's Djed Spence: A Serie A Return
Inter have made their move for Tottenham full-back Djed Spence, submitting a formal opening bid as the Italian club look to pounce on his slide down the pecking order in north London.
The 25-year-old, once tipped as a long-term solution at right-back, has struggled for minutes under Roberto De Zerbi despite his strong international profile. Now, with Spurs reshaping their defence, the door has swung open for a high-profile exit.
Inter show their hand
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that Inter have tabled an offer worth over €30 million for Spence as they attempt to strengthen Christian Chivu’s back line. The bid underlines the Nerazzurri’s determination to bring the former Nottingham Forest standout back to Italy, where he previously enjoyed a loan spell with Genoa.
This comes on the back of a heavy summer of spending at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and Inter sense an opportunity to strike while Spurs continue to overhaul their squad.
The deal has already cleared a major hurdle. According to GiveMeSport, Spence has given the move his full approval and reached a total agreement on personal terms with the Milan club, signalling a clear desire to test himself in Serie A again.
Spurs hold their ground
The numbers, though, still need to align. Inter’s bid of around €30m (£25.6m) is significant, but Tottenham are not ready to sign off yet. Reports indicate Spurs are holding out for at least €35m (£30m) plus performance-related add-ons, a package they feel better reflects Spence’s market value.
Inside the club, there is an awareness that Premier League rivals are watching. Tottenham know interest has existed from elsewhere in England and want a fee that mirrors the defender’s elevated status after his sensational World Cup campaign with England.
For now, that gap between offer and valuation is where the deal lives.
A crowded Spurs back line
Spence’s possible departure comes amid sweeping changes in Tottenham’s defence. The club have been aggressive in the market, bringing in Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke during the current window.
On top of that, first-choice right-back Pedro Porro has underlined his importance by signing a new long-term contract, tightening his grip on the position and squeezing Spence further out of the picture.
With Robertson, Destiny Udogie and Porro all ahead of him in the full-back hierarchy, the route to regular football at Spurs looks brutally narrow. A move abroad offers Spence a far clearer path to maintaining his momentum and rebuilding his club career.
Inter steal a march
Inter are not the only side who have tracked Spence, but they are now out in front. Manchester United and Liverpool had both been linked at points during the window, raising the prospect of an all-English tug-of-war.
That never truly materialised. Romano has clarified that Liverpool’s interest was exaggerated and that talks between the club and the player never advanced to a serious stage.
With Anfield effectively out of the running and no concrete move from United, Inter have seized the initiative and pushed the negotiations into a decisive phase. The player is on board. The project is clear.
All that remains is for the two clubs to find common ground on the fee. If they do, Spence’s next challenge will unfold under the lights of San Siro, not the shadows of the Tottenham bench.
