Inter Secures Spence for Long-Term Right Flank Solution

Inter have nailed down their right side for the long haul, completing the permanent signing of Spence from Tottenham Hotspur on a contract that runs all the way to June 2031.

Fresh from celebrating his 26th birthday, the England international has committed his prime years to San Siro after passing medicals both with the club and the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI). Inter have backed that belief with serious money: Spence will earn a reported €2.5m per season plus bonuses, while Tottenham receive €31.5m up front and a further €3.5m tied to performance-related add-ons.

For Inter, this is not a gamble. It is a calculated move built on evidence.

A return to Italy – and to a system that fits

Spence already knows Serie A. His six-month loan with Genoa in the 2024 season turned heads across Italy, but crucially, it convinced Inter’s hierarchy that he could live inside Cristian Chivu’s demanding framework.

Chivu wants his wing-backs to be relentless, technically sharp, and tactically intelligent. Spence has shown he can be all three. Comfortable on either flank as a wing-back, he hands Inter rare flexibility: one signing, two positions solved, and a coach with more options when games tighten and seasons stretch.

That Genoa spell was the audition. This is the starring role.

World Cup stage, world-class profile

Spence arrives in Milan with his reputation enhanced by a standout 2026 World Cup in North America. He was not a squad player. He was a fixture.

The defender featured in all eight of England’s matches, starting the semifinal defeat to Argentina and the third-place playoff win over France. That run, under intense global scrutiny, showcased his durability, temperament and ability to perform at the highest level.

Inter are not just signing a promising full-back. They are signing a proven international who has already lived through a deep World Cup campaign and come out stronger.

End of a Spurs chapter

Spence’s move brings an end to his time at Tottenham, where he made 85 appearances after joining from Middlesbrough in July 2022 for an initial £19m. It has been a journey built on persistence rather than shortcuts, from Championship prospect to Premier League regular and now a key piece in Inter’s title ambitions.

Tottenham’s willingness to sanction the transfer is rooted in their own reshaping of the back line. The London club have brought in veteran full-back Andy Robertson on a free transfer after his long spell at Liverpool. Robertson is expected to add leadership and depth on the left side, easing the impact of Spence’s departure and reshuffling the hierarchy in Ange Postecoglou’s defence.

One era closes, another begins.

English core at San Siro

Spence is not arriving alone into an Italian dressing room. He becomes the second England international to sign for Inter this summer, following John Stones’ free transfer from Manchester City.

Stones at the back, Spence patrolling the flank: Inter are building a clear Premier League-flavoured spine, experienced in high-pressure environments and accustomed to competing for major honours.

The timing is deliberate. Inter’s Serie A campaign kicks off at home to Monza on August 22, and Chivu now has one of his most important positions secured for the foreseeable future.

A new right flank, a stronger English core, and a long contract on the table – Inter have made their move. The rest of Serie A will soon discover just how much this one signing changes the landscape.
