Jack Grealish’s Manchester City story is edging towards its final chapter – and the next one could be written in Sunderland red and white.
According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Sunderland are in negotiations with Manchester City over a loan move for the England international, with an option to buy next year. That timing is no coincidence: Grealish’s contract at the Etihad runs out next summer, and City are ready to listen.
A key part of the talks centres on money. Sunderland want City to keep paying a portion of his wages, a familiar hurdle when a Premier League heavyweight moves down the ladder. If that compromise lands, it would be one of the most eye-catching deals of the window.
From record signing to expendable asset
City paid a staggering €117 million to sign Grealish in 2021, a fee that made him the most expensive British player of his generation. He responded with trophies, not always minutes. Multiple Premier League titles, a Champions League crown in 2023, and 159 appearances for a side that rarely stops winning.
But his influence faded. Season by season, his game time shrank. Under Pep Guardiola, the message was always the same: selection choices were tactical, not personal. The outcome was obvious all the same. Grealish slid from automatic starter to rotation option, then to something closer to a luxury.
The arrival of Enzo Maresca has not reversed that trend. Far from it. The new City manager has barely used him, turning to Grealish only in the Community Shield against Arsenal and at home to Bournemouth. For a player who once carried Aston Villa on his back, watching from the bench has become the norm.
Everton loan, injury, and a reset
Last season offered a glimpse of a different path. On loan at Everton, Grealish finally played with rhythm again. In 22 matches he produced two goals and six assists, numbers that only tell part of the story of a player who links lines, draws fouls, and shifts momentum with a touch.
Then the setback. A stress fracture in his foot in January cut his season short and forced him into rehabilitation. The momentum he had built on Merseyside stalled, and his City future grew even murkier.
