Jadon Sancho Leaves Manchester United as Squad Overhaul Begins

Manchester United have drawn a firm line under the Jadon Sancho era. The club has confirmed it will not activate the one-year option on his contract, meaning the winger will leave this summer alongside Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia.

The decision was made public in United’s annual retained and released list on Wednesday morning, a document that often slips out quietly but this year carries real symbolic weight. Sancho, once a £73m statement signing from Borussia Dortmund in July 2021, now departs having barely featured for the club over the past year.

Sancho’s United chapter closes

Sancho has not played a meaningful game for United since 26 August 2023. His only appearance this calendar year came as an 83rd‑minute substitute in the 2024 Community Shield, a footnote in a story that had already started to unravel.

The real break came a week after that August league outing, when he was omitted from the squad to face Arsenal. Erik ten Hag’s explanation and Sancho’s public response triggered a stand-off that never truly healed. From that point on, his future at Old Trafford was effectively sealed.

On the pitch, Sancho’s career took an unusual turn. He has spent the past three seasons away from United on loan at Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea and Aston Villa, and somehow managed to reach a European final with each of them – all in different competitions. Most recently, he was part of the Aston Villa squad that beat Freiburg in last month’s Europa League final, adding another curious layer to a career that has flourished on the continent far more than it ever did in Manchester.

For United, a player signed to be a cornerstone of their attack leaves as a peripheral figure, his time at the club defined more by absence and tension than by decisive moments on the pitch.

Casemiro and Malacia departures confirmed

Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia also head for the exit, their departures already known but now formally recorded. Head coach Michael Carrick had paid tribute to both on the pitch after the final home game of the season against Nottingham Forest on 17 May, a public farewell that underlined their status as outgoing figures.

Casemiro’s time at United brought experience and presence in midfield, while Malacia’s spell was interrupted and ultimately undermined by injury. The retained list simply rubber-stamps what the fans inside the stadium had already sensed: this squad is being reshaped with some urgency.

Young prospects move on, others step up

The clear-out is not limited to senior names. Youngsters Sonny Aljofree, James Bailey and Malachi Sharpe will all leave when their deals expire on 30 June. Aljofree, who spent the first half of last season on loan at Notts County, departs having had a taste of senior football but without a breakthrough at Old Trafford.

At the same time, United have moved to secure the next wave. The club has confirmed offers are in place for Albert Mills and Dante Plunkett to sign professional contracts in July. Their progression marks another small but important step in the ongoing attempt to refresh the squad from within.

There is, however, no update on England youth international Godwill Kukonki, who scored United’s goal in the FA Youth Cup final. His omission from the announcement leaves a question hanging over his future at the club.

Behind them, the academy conveyor belt keeps turning. It is anticipated that Kai Rooney and Jacey Carrick will become scholars in the forthcoming season, familiar surnames beginning their own journeys in United colours.

Sancho’s exit, alongside those of Casemiro and Malacia, strips away more of the recent past and clears space for what comes next. The names on this list are not just departures; they are a measure of how decisively United are prepared to redraw the squad. The real judgment will come when we see who walks through the door to replace them.
