James Ward-Prowse Returns to Southampton

James Ward-Prowse is back where it all began.

Southampton have re-signed their former captain from Championship rivals West Ham United, bringing the 31-year-old home to St Mary’s on a two-year deal worth just under £1m.

For Saints supporters, it is a reunion loaded with history and emotion. Ward-Prowse joined the club as an eight-year-old, rose through the academy and went on to make 410 first-team appearances before leaving in 2023 for West Ham.

“It feels a bit surreal,” he admitted. The last few days have been “pretty intense”, but the sight of red and white again has clearly hit a nerve. “I’m delighted to be back, and to be wearing the red and white again is truly special. It’s the place I call home, obviously having come through the academy since I was eight.”

His first spell on the south coast built a legacy few modern players can match at a single club. Ward-Prowse scored 55 goals and provided 52 assists for Southampton, his right foot becoming a trademark weapon. Seventeen of those goals were Premier League free-kicks, leaving him just one behind David Beckham’s all-time top-flight record of 18.

That specialist craft took him to England recognition too. Ward-Prowse has 11 caps for his country and two international goals, his set-piece delivery and relentless work-rate long admired at national level.

His move to West Ham brought a new chapter and 75 appearances in claret and blue, but it never fully severed the tie with the south coast. While contracted to the Hammers he also spent time on loan at Nottingham Forest and then Burnley, playing 14 times for the Clarets last season.

Yet the pull of home never really faded.

“It was an incredible journey up until the point that I left,” he said of his first Southampton spell. “But home is a special place and I always had it in the back of my mind that it was somewhere that I wanted to be. I’m here today very excited and looking forward to the challenge ahead.”

Now he returns older, battle-hardened and still chasing Beckham’s mark from dead balls. Southampton get back not just an academy graduate and former captain, but a proven Championship operator with unfinished business in the shirt that shaped him.
