JJ Gabriel Pushes for Barcelona Move Amid Manchester United Standoff
JJ Gabriel’s Manchester United future is hanging by a thread – and the teenager is now in Barcelona, pushing hard for a way out.
The 15-year-old, regarded as one of the brightest attacking prospects in United’s academy, has doubled down on his desire to leave, with multiple outlets confirming he is in Catalonia for face-to-face talks with the Spanish champions.
United, though, are digging in.
From internal concern to open standoff
Concerns inside Old Trafford first surfaced publicly on August 13, when TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey revealed that United were worried about keeping Gabriel at the club. Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona had already been circling, tracking the youngster’s situation closely.
By mid-September, the situation had escalated. On September 15, it emerged that Gabriel had formally informed United he wants out.
Sources said the teenager has submitted an official notice requesting the immediate cancellation of his registration with the club. If that request is eventually upheld, Gabriel would become a free agent just as he turns 16 next month, opening the door to a move abroad.
His Irish passport is a key factor. It gives him an EU route that many English-based youngsters simply do not have.
Contract complications and United’s stance
Bailey underlined the legal tangle earlier on Friday. Gabriel turns 16 on October 6, the date from which he can actively explore a switch to an EU club such as Real Madrid or Barcelona.
That birthday looms large because his status in England is far more complex. Gabriel’s academy registration with United officially runs until the end of the 2026/27 season. Despite his formal request to have that registration cancelled, United retain the right to challenge it and are expected to do exactly that.
ESPN reported this week that the club have no intention of tearing up the agreement they already have in place with the forward.
Behind the scenes, United have tried to change his mind. Transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano revealed that the club had been planning talks with Gabriel, with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe personally involved in the effort to convince him to stay.
For now, that charm offensive appears to have failed.
Barcelona move gathers pace
On Wednesday afternoon, the picture shifted again. Tyrone Marshall, the Manchester Evening News’ Chief Manchester United Correspondent, confirmed that Gabriel was in Barcelona for talks over a move to the Nou Camp.
“JJ Gabriel in Barcelona today for talks over a move to the Nou Camp. United will reject his request to be de-registered but threat of a move on October 6, which would require FIFA approval, remains #mufc,” Marshall posted on X at 3:19pm on September 18.
Just over 20 minutes later, he doubled down: “JJ Gabriel closer to Manchester United exit despite club rejecting his request to be de-registered. In Spain and holding talks with Barcelona today. Reports in Spain suggest he will get the EU passport he needs next week #mufc.”
Real Madrid-leaning outlet Marca has also reported that Gabriel is in Barcelona, underlining the seriousness of the situation. So has journalist Ben Jacobs, who wrote on X at 3:23pm: “JJ Gabriel is in Barcelona for talks. Barcelona and Real Madrid viewed as the most viable contenders if Gabriel goes abroad.”
The pressure has shifted firmly onto United’s side of the table. The club intend to reject his deregistration request, yet the clock is ticking towards October 6 and the possibility of FIFA being asked to step in.
