JJ Gabriel Flies to Barcelona Amid Manchester United Standoff

JJ Gabriel has taken matters into his own hands. The highly rated 15-year-old Manchester United forward has flown to Barcelona as he pushes to cut ties with the club and force a move to mainland Europe.

The teenager, who recently stunned United by formally requesting his registration be cancelled with immediate effect, left the UK on Thursday. He travelled via France before landing in Catalonia, where talks are expected to take place over his future.

His departure comes at the end of a turbulent few weeks. Gabriel has not trained with United since scoring a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut, a breakthrough performance that was followed by a controversial omission from the squad for the 4-0 Champions League win over Sabah. The absence raised eyebrows. The fallout has now become impossible to ignore.

Barcelona have been circling for some time. The Spanish giants hosted Gabriel in August 2024, giving him a tour of their facilities and the chance to meet Lamine Yamal, the latest jewel from La Masia. That visit underlined how serious their interest was. Now, with Gabriel on Catalan soil again, the stakes are far higher.

They are not alone in the chase. Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are all closely monitoring the situation, aware that a rare opportunity could open up if United relent. Under usual rules, UK-based players cannot move abroad until they turn 18. Gabriel is different. He holds an Irish passport, and that dual nationality means he can join an EU club as soon as he turns 16 on October 6.

For now, Manchester United are digging in. The club have so far refused his request to rip up his contract, leaving the forward in limbo and escalating the standoff. If United keep hold of his registration, he will be unable to join another English club this season, effectively closing off the domestic route and pushing the battle for his signature towards Europe.

Michael Carrick, speaking in his press conference on Friday, tried to lower the temperature while speculation swirled.

"He's a young boy, JJ, and I think it's important we don't play anything out here," the United manager said. "With the exposure and scrutiny and everything, you got to be careful and be sensible and think of him as much as anything. The situation will work itself out, whatever way it's going to work itself out. Making sure he's OK is the important thing."

Carrick’s message was clear: the club want to be seen to protect a teenager suddenly thrust into the spotlight. Behind the scenes, though, both United and Europe’s elite know this is a high-stakes tug of war over one of the most talked-about prospects in his age group.

Gabriel will not feature in the Premier League 2 fixture against Brentford on Friday as the dispute rumbles on. His absence there feels symbolic now. His next competitive minutes may not come in England at all.
