JJ Gabriel asks to leave Manchester United amid Barcelona interest
Manchester United have been hit by a major jolt to their long-term plans, with 15-year-old sensation JJ Gabriel asking to leave the club just as he stood on the brink of history.
The highly rated forward, widely viewed inside the game as one of the standout prospects of his age group, had been earmarked for a place in the squad for Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup tie against Brighton. Had he featured, he would have become the youngest player ever to appear for United in a competitive fixture.
Instead, Old Trafford has been left dealing with a problem no one there wanted.
Gabriel’s camp have informed the club of his desire to move on, casting serious doubt over his future at United at a time when his stock has never been higher. His current deal runs until the summer, and he cannot be deregistered before then, which has given United some hope that the relationship can be repaired and a path forward agreed.
Inside the academy, there is still a belief that the situation can be turned around.
Gabriel, son of former St Patrick's Athletic defender and Republic of Ireland international Joe O'Cearuill, has been on a steep upward curve. He trained with Michael Carrick’s group before making his first senior appearance in August, coming off the bench in a friendly against Atletico Madrid and accelerating the sense that United were nurturing something special.
That feeling only grew last week. On his UEFA Youth League debut against Sabah, Gabriel produced a hat-trick in a 5-0 win, a performance that underlined why Europe’s elite have been tracking his progress.
After that game, Adam Lawrence, United’s professional development phase lead who took charge of the team on the night, underlined how heavily the club had invested in the teenager’s rise.
“JJ is surrounded by people that really, really believe in him from the top of the club right the way through,” Lawrence said. “He’s been at the club for so long. He’s got real good relationships with the players, with the staff, so I think over the course of time obviously that helps as well.
“At the moment, just in terms of his game, his games programme, his training programme, it’s about making sure that he’s getting the right exposure across different levels.
“We’re obviously not perfect but it’s definitely something we put a lot of thought into, so it’s good to see him enjoying his football in a good place.”
That “good place” now looks far less certain.
According to reports, Barcelona have a strong interest in the teenager. Gabriel holds an Irish passport, which would allow him to move to Europe when he turns 16, opening the door to a potential switch to Spain once he reaches that milestone in October.
Off the pitch, the signs of a shifting landscape are already visible. Gabriel has built a huge social media following for someone yet to make a competitive senior appearance, amassing 844,000 followers on Instagram. Recently, his account was wiped of all posts, a move that only fuels speculation over his next step.
Inside United’s academy, losing him would sting. Last season, Gabriel became the youngest ever winner of the club’s prestigious Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award, a prize that has previously highlighted future first-team regulars and international stars.
United had planned to make him the next name on that production line. Now they are fighting just to keep him in the building, with Barcelona and the wider European market watching closely as one of the most talked-about teenagers in English football weighs up his future.
