Gabriel has become one of the most coveted teenagers in Europe, with Premier League clubs monitoring him alongside Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich. Interest intensified after he and his camp submitted a formal request to leave United, a decision that has shaken Old Trafford’s youth structure.
He is under contract until the end of the season, and there remains hope inside United that they can convince him to commit his future. But each day, each meeting, each rumour around Barcelona and beyond, makes that hope feel thinner.
Formal request after hat-trick statement
The turning point came last Thursday. United hammered Sabah 5-0 in the UEFA Youth League. Gabriel scored a hat-trick. It should have been the kind of night that cements a pathway, not triggers an exit.
Soon after that game, Gabriel and his representatives lodged a formal request to be de-registered.
Since then, he has not trained with United. On Friday, when England’s latest youth squads were announced, his name was missing. Gabriel has represented England at U17 level, but he was overlooked this time, adding another layer of intrigue around his situation and next move.
FIFA loophole and European passport route
Behind the scenes, the legal and regulatory angles are just as important as the football ones.
There is a belief, based on previous precedent and a FIFA loophole, that Gabriel could leave United for a European club once he turns 16 on October 6, provided he secures a European passport through either of his parents. That route would potentially allow him to move outside the traditional domestic compensation framework that usually protects English clubs when top youngsters leave.
Any transfer, though, would still need FIFA approval. That step remains a significant hurdle, but not one big clubs are afraid to approach when the talent is considered special enough.
Carrick: ‘You’ve got to be careful’
United head coach Michael Carrick cut a measured figure when asked about Gabriel on Friday. The story is exploding around a teenager who has not yet turned 16, and Carrick made it clear the club is wary of the spotlight.
“I think he's a young boy, JJ, and I think it's important that we certainly don't play anything out here,” he said.
“I think the exposure and the scrutiny and everything, you've got to be careful and be sensible and think of him as much as anything, so the situation will work itself out, whatever way it's going to work itself out. Making sure he's okay is the important thing.”
No grand declarations. No public pressure. Just a manager trying to shield a prodigy while the biggest clubs in Europe circle.
Merson: ‘Massive blow’ if United lose him
Outside Old Trafford, the tone is less cautious. Sky Sports’ Paul Merson did not hold back when assessing what Gabriel’s departure would mean for United.
“First of all, he's an unbelievable talent,” Merson said.
“The problem now is with the lad and probably his agents and his family - I don't know him so I'm only thinking from the outside.
“When you're watching Max Dowman at Arsenal and Rio Ngumoha getting given a chance at Liverpool and doing very well, he's probably thinking, 'I should be playing at Man Utd now as well'.”
“This is the problem you're going to have with the kids of this day and age. They're so talented that they want to play straight away. When I was playing, it was unheard of at 16.
“It'll be a massive blow for Man Utd. Believe me, this kid is an unbelievable talent. They'll have every club in the world wanting him.”
That is the crux of United’s dilemma. In an era where teenagers see their peers breaking through at rival clubs, patience is harder to sell than a move to Barcelona, Madrid or Paris.
United have seen this film before. The question now is whether they can rewrite the ending for JJ Gabriel, or whether another of their most gifted youngsters will walk away before Old Trafford ever truly sees him.
