Joey Veerman Joins Borussia Dortmund: A Game-Changer for Midfield

Borussia Dortmund have moved decisively in the market, sealing the permanent signing of Joey Veerman from PSV and dropping a clear marker for the season ahead.

The Dutch midfielder arrives at Signal Iduna Park as more than just another addition to the squad. He lands as the man entrusted with restoring control and craft to the heart of Dortmund’s midfield, an area the club openly identified as a priority.

Veerman comes with a winning habit. He leaves the Eredivisie having lifted three straight league titles in 2023–24, 2024–25 and 2025–26, plus back-to-back KNVB Cups in 2021–22 and 2022–23. That kind of résumé travels well. So does his reputation: a technically sharp playmaker, comfortable dictating tempo and threading passes through tight spaces, tested both domestically and in European competition.

Dortmund’s hierarchy have been blunt about why this deal mattered.

“Joey is a player whose skills will be of enormous help to us,” said Managing Director of Sports Lars Ricken. “We have deliberately focused our transfer activities this summer on central midfield, because with Pascal Gross and Salih Ozcan, we’ve lost two players there since the start of the year – and we plan to use Emre Can in central defense once he returns to the team.”

That shift in squad structure leaves a vacancy for a conductor. Veerman has been signed to fill it.

Sporting Director Ole Book went even further in his assessment of the new arrival. “Joey is a truly outstanding soccer player who possesses a great deal of creativity, technical skill, and vision. He has shown at PSV Eindhoven and with the Dutch national team that he can consistently perform at the highest level. We’re excited that he’ll be bringing his talents to our team in the future.”

The move to the Bundesliga now opens a new chapter. The pace is faster, the duels fiercer, the scrutiny harsher. Pre-season will not just be about fitness for Veerman; it will be his crash course in the rhythms and intensity of German football, and in building an understanding with his new teammates.

For the supporters, the wait begins. The paperwork is done, the photos in black and yellow are taken. The next question is simple: when does he play?

Attention will quickly turn to his potential debut and how he fits into the starting XI. Is he the deep-lying organiser, the advanced creator, or the flexible link between both roles? However he is used, Dortmund expect his arrival to sharpen their edge in both domestic and European competition.

The club believe this is the kind of signing that can tilt a season. Now it’s over to Veerman to show that the control he brought to Eindhoven can travel to the Südtribüne and anchor a serious push for trophies in the Bundesliga.
