Jorge Mendes' Bold Swap Deal: Leao to Manchester City for Dias
Jorge Mendes is reportedly working on one of the boldest moves of the summer: a swap that would send Rafael Leao to Manchester City and bring Ruben Dias to Milan, with the Italians also adding cash to the deal.
The story, reported by Sport Mediaset, drops into a Milan market already heavily shaped by the Portuguese super agent. Mendes has been at the heart of the Rossoneri’s plans in recent weeks, from the appointment of coach Ruben Amorim to the arrivals of Goncalo Ramos from Paris Saint-Germain and Diego Moreira from RC Strasbourg.
On Thursday, Mendes spent the entire afternoon inside Casa Milan. Not a courtesy visit. A working session.
The latest idea on the table is as ambitious as it is complex: use Leao, plus a cash payment, as the key to unlock Dias from Manchester City. Milan have been openly searching for a new solution for Leao, whose contract runs until 2028 but who has not attracted the kind of bids the club expected. The asking price sits at around €50m plus add-ons, yet no club has come close so far.
So the equation changes. If no one pays the fee, can Leao become a bargaining chip for an elite centre-back?
Milan have already moved to strengthen their defence with Mario Gila arriving from Lazio, but Amorim wants more. He needs defenders who can execute his high line, his aggressive pressing, his specific positional demands. Dias fits that profile perfectly: experienced, tactically disciplined, and comfortable defending large spaces.
The Portugal international turned 29 in May and remains one of the pillars of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. He joined the Premier League champions from Benfica in 2020 for €71.6m and is tied to the club until June 2029, a contract that underlines how highly City value him. He has also been linked with a possible move to Real Madrid this summer, another sign of his standing at the top of the European game.
Convincing City to part with Dias would be a monumental task. Any deal involving him would require not just a substantial financial package but a player of serious quality going the other way. That is where Mendes believes Leao could come in.
For Milan, the calculation is stark: trade one of their most explosive attacking talents to secure a defensive leader around whom Amorim can build his back line for years. For City, it would mean sacrificing a cornerstone of their defence to add a devastating wide forward entering his prime.
For now, it remains an idea in the hands of one of football’s most influential agents. If Mendes can turn this proposal into reality, the balance of two European giants could shift in a single stroke.
