Julian Alvarez’s Atletico Future: Simeone's Stance and Barcelona's Interest
Julian Alvarez is back on the training pitch with Atletico Madrid, but his future is anything but settled.
The Argentine forward held a face-to-face conversation with Diego Simeone before Wednesday’s session, laying out his stance amid growing uncertainty over where he will play this season, according to Pedro Fullana. It was a direct, necessary conversation between a player who wants out and a coach who does not want to lose him.
Alvarez has become one of the defining stories of the summer window after making clear his desire to leave Atletico, with Barcelona identified as his preferred destination. He has not hidden that. Barca have not either.
Simeone, though, is digging in. The Atleti boss still views Alvarez as one of the pillars of his squad and is resisting any attempt to prise him away from Madrid.
Back with the group, but not at peace
Alvarez rejoined full first-team training on Wednesday after completing medical tests and working alone on Tuesday. It was his first full session with the Rojiblancos since his involvement at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a return that should have signalled a clean reset.
Instead, it underlined the tension.
Before the players went out to work, the two Argentines sat down and addressed the issue head-on. Alvarez explained his situation and reiterated his position. Simeone, for his part, made it clear he wants the forward to stay.
From the player’s side, the message remains unchanged: he sees his future away from Atletico, with Barcelona at the front of the queue.
Barcelona pushing, Atletico blocking
Barcelona have long been the only club seriously pushing for Alvarez. That part is straightforward. Everything else is not.
Atletico have consistently refused to open the door. The club’s hierarchy has repeated the same line: Alvarez is not for sale. CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin has publicly backed that stance, pointing to the forward’s contract, which runs until 2030, and his €500 million release clause.
Those numbers are not just for show. They hand Atletico enormous leverage and make any Barcelona move look almost impossible under current conditions.
The relationship between the two clubs only adds more friction. Barcelona’s contacts with Alvarez’s camp while he remained under contract at Atletico triggered an extraordinary disciplinary procedure from the Disciplinary Committee of the Royal Spanish Football Federation. It was a rare, formal escalation that exposed just how sensitive this chase has become.
Even so, Barcelona have not walked away. They continue to monitor, to wait, to hope for a crack in Atletico’s position.
Right now, that crack does not exist. For a deal to happen, something major has to give — the club’s stance, the player’s pressure, or the political temperature between two giants already on edge.
