Julian Alvarez Standoff: Atletico Madrid Bans Barcelona Move, Arsenal in Play

Julian Alvarez has effectively drawn a line in the sand at Atletico Madrid – and the only escape route left open to him leads to Arsenal, not Barcelona.

The Argentina striker has not reported for training for two straight days after being told behind closed doors that Atletico will not sell him to Barca. Club sources have confirmed to BBC Sport that senior figures at the Spanish side informed Alvarez and his representatives earlier this week that they would refuse to enter talks with the Catalan club.

Alvarez, 26, has since stayed away from training, citing illness, as the stand-off deepens.

Atletico have not tried to soften the message. They have gone public twice in 24 hours, issuing statements that underline a hard line: Alvarez will not be granted his wish to move to Barcelona in the coming days.

The door to Arsenal, though, is wide open.

Atletico are prepared to negotiate with the Premier League champions and have already held direct talks over what would be one of the headline transfers of the summer window. Director Mateu Alemany travelled to London last week, where he met Arsenal officials and made clear Atletico’s price: 150m euros (£128m).

Mikel Arteta wants Alvarez this month. Badly. But the forward’s clear preference for Barcelona has stalled Arsenal’s push, leaving the London club waiting on a change of heart.

Even so, discussions between Atletico and Arsenal over a club-to-club agreement are described as positive. The framework is there. The numbers are on the table. If Alvarez gives Arsenal the green light in the coming days, those involved expect the deal to accelerate quickly.

Barcelona, for now, are being kept at arm’s length. After Barca president Joan Laporta publicly stated they still wanted to sign Alvarez, Atletico fired back on Wednesday with a blunt statement: “There is 0% chance of selling him to Barca.”

On Thursday, the Atletico board reinforced that stance with another message, this time stressing internal unity: “The members of Atletico de Madrid’s board of directors have unanimously expressed their absolute support for the club’s decision to not negotiate the transfer of Julian Alvarez to FC Barcelona.”

Atletico have drawn their battle lines. Barcelona are shut out. Arsenal are in. The next move belongs to Alvarez.
