Julian Alvarez Faces Tension at Atletico Madrid Amid Transfer Speculation
Julian Alvarez felt the mood long before he felt the ball.
Back in Atletico Madrid’s matchday squad after his post-World Cup break, the Argentina forward walked out at the Metropolitano to a chorus of whistles before a tense 2-2 draw with Villarreal. The noise had little to do with his fitness and everything to do with his future.
Left out of the midweek win over Malaga to work on conditioning, Alvarez was restored to Diego Simeone’s bench on Sunday. His name over the tannoy drew boos from sections of the home support. When he finally stepped onto the pitch just after the hour, with Atletico down to ten men and chasing control of a chaotic game, the reaction was the same.
The tension didn’t ease at full-time. As his team-mates moved toward the stands to acknowledge the fans, Alvarez headed straight for the tunnel. A scarf flew in his direction as he disappeared from view, a small but sharp symbol of the fracture between player and crowd.
Simeone, asked to explain the scene afterwards, made it clear the decision had not been Alvarez’s.
“The club staff told me that the club decided Julian should not go over with his teammates to greet the fans, and that it was not Julian’s decision,” the Atletico coach told reporters. “The club made the decision to keep him away and have him head to the dressing room.”
Pressed on the whistles and the growing disconnect, Simeone refused to turn his fire on the supporters.
“No, I’m not in a position to give advice to the fans,” he said. “I think I need to focus on my work, which is to give my best on the sporting side for the good of Atletico de Madrid.
“The only thing I know is that if Atletico de Madrid wants to win a title, we have to be united. We need forwards, and we need important forwards. For that, of course, we all have to work in that direction to give the team what it needs.”
Unity, though, is hard to find when a transfer saga hangs over everything.
Alvarez has been open about his desire to join Barcelona this summer, pushing for a move that, for a time, looked like it might reshape LaLiga’s attacking landscape. The Catalan club are now understood to be looking elsewhere, their focus shifting to other options as the window winds down.
That change has cracked the door open for Arsenal. The Premier League side, long linked with a big attacking addition, have been handed fresh encouragement by Barca’s stance, with suggestions over the weekend that a late, high-profile return to England is now on the table.
So the whistles at the Metropolitano may have been aimed at a player in red and white. The real target, though, might have been the uncertainty. And with the deadline closing in, Atletico must decide quickly: rebuild the bond with a forward they still need, or cash in and watch him walk back into the Premier League spotlight wearing different colours.
