Julián Álvarez has pressed pause, not stop, on one of the summer’s longest-running transfer sagas.

The Argentine forward has told Atlético Madrid he will stay at the Metropolitano at least until the January window, shutting down late moves from abroad but leaving the door ajar for Barcelona, the club he still wants above all others.

SPORT report that Álvarez has personally informed Atlético sporting director Mateu Alemany of his decision to remain in Diego Simeone’s squad for the first half of the season. It comes despite his clear preference for a switch to Camp Nou and concrete interest from several clubs across Europe.

Premier League route closed, Barça path still visible

The immediate consequence is simple: Álvarez stays in La Liga until winter. The knock-on effect is more intriguing.

A late move to the Premier League, where Arsenal had emerged as the most serious contender, is effectively off the table. The London club had pushed hardest to tempt him to England, but the forward was never driven by the idea of choosing “anywhere but Madrid”. If it wasn’t Barcelona, it was always going to be a hard sell.

He chose not to jump just for the sake of moving. Atlético would not open the door to Barça, and Álvarez would not walk through another one simply to escape.

So he stays. Simeone keeps a versatile, hard‑running attacker for at least another half-season. And the saga takes on a new phase rather than a full stop.

Barcelona admiration meets Atlético resistance

The Catalan club have been unusually open in their pursuit. President Joan Laporta has spoken publicly about their admiration for Álvarez, a stance that only sharpened tensions with Atlético’s hierarchy.

In Madrid, the reaction was frosty. Atlético’s board never showed any appetite for serious talks with Barça over one of their key forwards. CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín repeatedly underlined the club’s position, leaving Barcelona with almost no room to manoeuvre in this window.

Álvarez’s preference has been a central thread throughout. Multiple offers arrived over the summer, with Arsenal especially determined to bring him to the Premier League. Yet none of those alternatives matched the pull of Barcelona for the 26‑year‑old.

Barcelona, meanwhile, have already moved to reinforce their attack with Gabriel Jesus, easing some of the immediate pressure to land Álvarez. That signing does not close the chapter, though. Inside the club, the Argentine remains a long‑term target, a profile they continue to value.

And crucially, Álvarez still wants them.
