Julián Álvarez can see only one door left open this summer – and it doesn’t lead to Barcelona.
Atlético Madrid have shut that path completely. According to "Marca", the club’s position is absolute: they will not sell their Argentine forward to the Catalans, with insiders at the Metropolitano describing the chances of a deal with Barça as “zero”. Not slim. Not unlikely. Zero.
Álvarez, desperate to force the move he wants, has now skipped training for a third consecutive day as he clings to his dream of pulling on the Barcelona shirt. Joan Laporta had vowed that Barça would keep pushing until deadline day, but every public word from Madrid has only hardened Atlético’s stance and deepened the rift between the two clubs.
The tension has been brewing for weeks. It spiked after the flashpoint against Villarreal, when sections of the Atlético support turned on their own star, jeering him as he left the pitch. Álvarez went straight down the tunnel, alone, without the usual post-match gestures. From that moment, his future in the Spanish capital felt fragile. Now it looks almost untenable.
If Barcelona is off the table, Atlético’s message is clear: a foreign club can have him – for 150 million euros. That price tag has not scared everyone away. Far from it.
Arsenal have emerged as the most realistic escape route. The Premier League side have been tracking Álvarez closely and like what they see, both in terms of his profile and his mentality. The player, for his part, is attracted by their sporting project and the idea of leading the line in North London.
But the deal is not just about tactics, goals, and transfer fees. There is a bureaucratic hurdle that could yet slow everything down.
Álvarez’s family live with him in Spain, and any move to England would have to take them into account. Post‑Brexit immigration rules in the United Kingdom are stricter, and some of his relatives saw their residency permits expire after his previous spell in the country. That complicates a return, at least on the family side.
Not every case is the same, though. Journalist Verónica Brunati has reported that Álvarez’s wife should be able to obtain residency as the dependent partner of a worker with a valid visa. If the transfer goes through and he secures a work permit, she would be entitled to live legally with him in the UK.
Arsenal believe they can navigate that maze. Inside the club, there is confidence they can manage the visa process for Álvarez and his family if he gives the green light to a move to the Emirates Stadium. What they have not done yet is make the decisive official offer that would truly test Atlético’s resolve in the foreign market.
Five days remain until the window closes on 1 September. Barcelona’s door is bolted shut. Atlético are waiting for 150 million euros. Arsenal are circling, paperwork ready.
