Julián Álvarez's Future: No Path to Barcelona, Arsenal Waits
Julián Álvarez can see only one open door this summer – and it does not lead to Barcelona.
Atlético Madrid have shut that path completely. According to "Marca", club sources are adamant: they will not sell the Argentine striker to the Catalan side. Their internal message is blunt – the chance of Álvarez joining Barcelona is "zero".
Álvarez, though, has not let go of the idea. He has now skipped training for a third consecutive day, holding on to his dream of pulling on the Barcelona shirt. The stand-off has only hardened positions on both sides of the divide.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta had publicly vowed to keep pushing until deadline day. Instead of softening Atlético’s stance, that insistence appears to have had the opposite effect. The Madrid club doubled down, with the board issuing a formal statement backing the decision not to negotiate with Barcelona. The relationship between the two clubs, already tense, has grown more strained with each passing day of this saga.
With the domestic route blocked, Atlético have drawn a different line: Álvarez can leave, but only abroad and only for 150 million euros. His future in the Spanish capital was already fragile after a flashpoint against Villarreal, when sections of the Atlético support jeered their own star and Álvarez walked straight off to the dressing room alone. That moment felt like a fracture. The current impasse has widened it.
Into that gap step Arsenal.
The Premier League club are monitoring the situation closely and are viewed as the most realistic escape route. Arsenal like the player. Álvarez, for his part, is attracted by their sporting project and the prospect of leading the line in London. On the football side, the fit is clear enough.
Away from the pitch, it becomes more complicated. Álvarez’s family live with him in Spain, and any move to England would drag the realities of post-Brexit Britain into the heart of the deal. Tougher immigration rules could slow or even derail a transfer, particularly as some of his relatives’ residency permits expired after his previous spell in England.
Not every case is the same. Journalist Verónica Brunati has reported that Álvarez’s wife should be able to secure residency as the dependent partner of a work visa holder, which would allow her to live with him legally in the United Kingdom. That offers Arsenal a starting point, but not a complete solution.
Inside the Emirates, there is confidence they can navigate the paperwork and secure the necessary visas for the player’s family if Álvarez gives the green light. They believe the bureaucratic hurdles are manageable, not decisive.
What Arsenal have not done yet is make their decisive move. No formal, knockout offer has landed on Atlético’s desk, even though the London club are convinced an agreement is possible before the window closes on 1 September.
The clock is ticking. Barcelona are locked out, Atlético are waiting, and Arsenal hover in the background. Álvarez has one way out. The question now is whether anyone in London is bold enough to take it.
