Julian Alvarez Faces Hostile Reception at Metropolitano
Julian Alvarez walked back into the Metropolitano and straight into a storm.
The Argentinian forward, pushing to leave Atletico Madrid this summer, was greeted not with polite unease but with open hostility from his own supporters during Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Villarreal.
Booed on sight
His future has dominated Atletico’s early-season narrative. Strong links to Premier League champions Arsenal and Barcelona have only fuelled the tension, even as the club publicly insist he is not for sale. The relationship is fraying. Everyone inside the ground knew it.
So when the first home team sheet of the season dropped, all attention went to one name. Alvarez was there, but only among the substitutes. It did nothing to cool the mood.
The first wave hit during the warm-up. Every touch, every stride along the touchline drew jeers from sections of the home crowd. The message sharpened when Diego Simeone turned to his bench in the 66th minute.
As Alvarez stepped onto the pitch, the whistles crashed down. Loud. Prolonged. Unmistakable.
A hostile homecoming
Atletico were already under pressure by then. Marc Pubill had given them the lead, only for Villarreal captain Gerard Moreno to level from the penalty spot just before the hour.
Alvarez entered with the game finely balanced but the atmosphere already poisoned. Each involvement unfolded against a backdrop of hostility from the stands that once adored him.
Villarreal then flipped the script completely. A second penalty, this time converted by Georges Mikautadze, put the visitors in front and left Atletico staring at a damaging home defeat in their opener at the Metropolitano.
Relief came late and from a familiar source. Giuliano Simeone, another Argentinian and the coach’s son, struck five minutes from time to salvage a 2-2 draw and spare Atletico an even more bruising evening.
Straight down the tunnel
The final whistle did not bring reconciliation. While his team-mates moved toward the stands to applaud the supporters, Alvarez chose a different route.
He turned away, heading straight down the tunnel alone. The jeers followed him off the pitch, echoing the anger of a fanbase that has watched one of its stars agitate for a move while the club digs in its heels.
The stalemate on the pitch matched the one off it. Atletico insist he is going nowhere. Alvarez wants out. The fans have made their feelings clear.
