Juventus Loan Newcastle's Nick Woltemade Before Transfer Deadline
Juventus have struck a deal to take Newcastle United forward Nick Woltemade on a season-long loan, moving quickly to land a striker before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.
The 24-year-old is expected in Turin for a medical after the clubs agreed a £3.5m fee, with no option to buy included in the agreement. Juventus get flexibility. Newcastle keep control of a £69m asset who has yet to fully settle under their new manager.
Woltemade only arrived at St James’ Park from Stuttgart in August 2025, a headline signing billed as a cornerstone of Newcastle’s next phase. But under Matthias Jaissle, he has started just one of the German coach’s first three matches in charge. On Saturday he came off the bench at Tottenham Hotspur and made an impact, setting up Yoane Wissa in a 2-0 away win, yet that cameo has not altered the broader picture: minutes are scarce, and the club are reshaping their attack.
The move also fits Juventus’ evolving plan. With Jonathan David poised to join Atletico Madrid on loan, the Turin club had been scouring the market for a forward who could slot straight into their system without wrecking their budget.
They held talks with Manchester United over Joshua Zirkzee after his proposed switch to Fiorentina collapsed. United, though, pushed for an obligation-to-buy clause in any loan. Juventus walked away. They wanted room to manoeuvre, not a deal that boxed them in.
That stance opened the door for Woltemade. Juventus view him as a better tactical fit and, crucially, a cheaper one. The absence of any obligation or option to buy keeps the risk low and the pressure off. If it works, they gain a versatile forward for a season. If it doesn’t, they can move on next summer.
Newcastle, for their part, have been lining up their own attacking reshuffle. BBC Sport had already reported that a move for Lille forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo could clear the way for Woltemade’s departure. That domino has now all but fallen: Fernandez-Pardo flew into Tyneside on Monday evening to finalise a transfer worth up to £55m.
If Fernandez-Pardo signs as expected, Jaissle will have his preferred forward line taking shape while Woltemade looks to relaunch in Serie A. One club trims and reinvests. The other gambles on potential at a cut price.
Now it comes down to the medical in Turin and the final signatures. For Woltemade, a stop-start spell in England gives way to a fresh challenge in Italy — and a chance to prove why he was a record signing in the first place.
