Juventus Signs Defender Jhon Lucumí for €22 Million

Juventus finally have their defender.

After a summer spent circling options and weighing costs, the club opened the week of the new season by landing the man they had targeted for months: Jhon Lucumí, the backbone of Bologna’s rise, and now the latest piece in Juve’s defensive rebuild.

The deal, announced on Monday, is worth up to €22 million. Juventus will pay Bologna an initial €19.5 million, spread over three financial years, with up to €0.6 million in ancillary costs and a further €2 million available in performance-related bonuses. Lucumí has signed a contract running until June 30, 2030, and is set to earn around €2.5 million net per season.

This is not a move that came together overnight. The 28-year-old Colombian, fresh from an impressive World Cup campaign, had long made it clear where he wanted to go. While other offers and possibilities surfaced, he held firm, waiting for Juventus and Bologna to finally find common ground. That breakthrough came late last week. The outcome is the transfer he pushed for all summer.

For Juventus, the timing matters. Their back line has cried out for renewal, with the club searching for a defender in his prime who can slot straight into the starting XI and stay there for years. Lucumí fits that profile. Strong in duels, reliable on the ball, and used to operating in a tactically demanding system, he arrives not as a project but as a ready-made pillar.

For Bologna, his departure closes a defining chapter. Lucumí spent four seasons at the club and stood at the heart of its transformation. Under Thiago Motta he became the anchor of a side that surged all the way to Champions League qualification, then followed that breakthrough with a Coppa Italia final victory the following year. He was not just present for the rise; he was central to it.

The numbers back that up. In each of his four Serie A campaigns with Bologna, Lucumí logged at least 2,200 league minutes, a marker of both fitness and trust. Managers leaned on him, week after week, to hold the line and set the tone.

Now that reliability belongs to Juventus.

The question is no longer whether they would act, but how quickly Lucumí can turn a long-awaited signing into a new defensive standard in Turin.
