Kees Smit Explains Why He Turned Down Real Madrid to Stay at AZ Alkmaar

AZ Alkmaar midfielder Kees Smit has shared the reasons behind his decision to stay put at his current club despite strong interest from Real Madrid over the summer. The young Dutch talent, who had been linked with a high-profile move to Spain, chose to continue his development in the Eredivisie following key discussions with AZ.

Real Madrid’s Search for Midfield Talent

Real Madrid spent much of the recent transfer window looking to strengthen their midfield options. Although they brought in former Manchester City star Bernardo Silva and promising youngster Sergio Martinez, the club was still eager to add more depth. "To be honest, at first I had the feeling that I was going to leave, but then it turned out that the coach really wanted me to stay," Smit said. "I feel good here, surrounded by friends and family. That’s why I stayed."

Smit also mentioned that just ten days before the transfer window closed, AZ decided to block any potential moves.

"Ten days ago I had a conversation and then AZ didn’t want to let me go anymore," he added. "I took it positively, because I feel like I’m not done here yet."

Staying Focused Amid Transfer Speculation

The pressure and media attention surrounding a possible transfer to a club like Real Madrid can be overwhelming. Smit admitted he initially followed the reports closely but soon distanced himself from the rumors.

"At first I read a lot, but then I started to do it less," he noted. "Because some things are not true either. I can cope with it quite well. In short, I’m here and I’m happy to be here."

Continuing Growth in the Eredivisie

With the transfer window now closed, Kees Smit is fully focused on his progress at AZ Alkmaar’s AFAS Stadion. Staying in a familiar environment guarantees him valuable first-team experience under Echteld’s guidance.

He has already made an impact this season, playing a key role as AZ won the Johan Cruyff Shield with a 4-0 victory over PSV Eindhoven. Having helped lift the KNVB Cup last season, Smit’s form signals his readiness to take on bigger challenges ahead.
