Kim Min-jae: Juventus Leads Manchester United in Transfer Race

Kim Min-jae has emerged on Manchester United’s radar, but the Premier League side are playing catch-up in a race Juventus currently control.

According to Bild football chief Christian Falk, United are monitoring the Bayern Munich centre-back as they weigh up options for their defensive rebuild. Kim, 29, fits the profile: experienced at the highest level, physically dominant, and comfortable on the ball.

Yet the road to Old Trafford is anything but clear.

Juventus in pole position

In Italy, the mood is very different. Reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport suggest Kim has already given the green light to a move to Juventus, where the lure is obvious. A switch to Turin would drop him straight back into Serie A, a league he knows well, and potentially reunite him with Luciano Spalletti, under whom he shone at Napoli.

That connection matters. Under Spalletti, Kim was a cornerstone of Napoli’s title-winning side, his aggressive front-foot defending and calm distribution turning him into one of Europe’s most coveted defenders. A reunion in black and white would offer familiarity and a clearly defined role in a team built from the back.

For now, Juventus are seen as the front-runners. They have the coach link, the league Kim already conquered, and a project that promises a central role rather than a rotational one.

United wait in the wings

Manchester United, by contrast, are in the wings, not centre stage. If the Juventus move stalls or collapses, United are ready to explore talks over a deal, sensing an opportunity to add proven quality to a back line that has lacked stability and fitness across multiple seasons.

The interest from Old Trafford underlines how highly Kim is rated across Europe. United’s recruitment team have long targeted defenders with his mix of aerial strength and composure under pressure, and the South Korean international ticks those boxes.

But this is not a straightforward extraction from Bavaria.

Bayern stance and Kim’s contentment

Kim is under contract at Bayern Munich and, crucially, is said to be content with his current status as a squad player. That satisfaction changes the tone of the situation. This is not a player agitating for a move or frozen out of the picture; it is a defender settled at a club competing for major honours every season.

For Bayern, that makes a departure far from guaranteed. Any club looking to prise him away will need more than interest and admiration. They will need a compelling sporting project and the financial muscle to persuade both player and club that a deal is worth doing.

So the picture is clear, if not yet resolved: Juventus lead, Manchester United lurk, and Bayern hold a player who is in no rush to force the issue.

The next move belongs to Turin. If they hesitate, Old Trafford will be waiting.
