Jürgen Klopp Names Marc-André ter Stegen as Germany's New No 1 Goalkeeper
Jürgen Klopp has wasted no time putting his stamp on Germany.
In his first major call as national team coach, he has ended years of debate over the No 1 shirt and hauled a goalkeeper back from the brink of international exile.
According to German daily "Bild", Klopp has decided that Marc-André ter Stegen will be Germany’s new first-choice goalkeeper. The Barcelona man, currently on loan at Ajax, is back at the heart of the project.
This was not a quiet, bureaucratic note passed along the chain. Klopp picked up the phone himself. He called the 34-year-old, told him he trusted him completely, and confirmed he would be in his very first squad, to be announced next Thursday.
For Ter Stegen, it closes a dark chapter. Injury ruled him out of the last World Cup and he then disappeared from the national team picture for more than a year. Now he returns not just as a squad member, but as the man in goal.
The setting for his comeback could hardly be more symbolic. Germany’s first UEFA Nations League match under Klopp takes place on 24 September in Amsterdam, against the Netherlands. The city where Ter Stegen now lives. The stadium he now calls home as Ajax’s goalkeeper. He will walk out there wearing different colours, with a different anthem, and with his international career reborn.
Baumann Era Ends

Several German outlets report that Klopp has decided to leave the Hoffenheim goalkeeper out of his first squad altogether. After years spent in the shadows as a backup option behind Manuel Neuer for the four-time world champions, Baumann now finds the door closed. An entire chapter of German goalkeeping succession planning seems to have been ripped out and rewritten.
Behind Ter Stegen, the hierarchy is anything but settled. The battle for the second and third goalkeeper spots is wide open and suddenly charged with opportunity.
Bayern Munich’s young keeper Jonas Urbig and Beşiktaş goalkeeper Alexander Nübel are understood to be leading the chase. Both are pushing hard, both are seen as part of the next generation, and both now sense a genuine pathway into the national team.
Augsburg’s Finn Dahmen is firmly in that conversation as well. His chances of making the cut are described as strong, and Klopp’s willingness to refresh the pecking order only boosts his case.
Loris Karius sits on the fringes of this reshuffle. Despite an impressive spell with Schalke and his long-standing connection with Klopp from their time together at Liverpool, he is expected to play only a minor role in the new era.
