Lamine Camara Focused on Monaco After Chelsea Move Collapse

Lamine Camara insists he has “turned the page” on his collapsed move to Chelsea and is now locked in on Monaco’s Ligue 1 campaign.

The 22-year-old midfielder had undergone a medical ahead of a £47.1m transfer to Stamford Bridge, only for the deal to fall apart in the final hours before the window shut. What looked like a defining move in his young career never materialised.

It capped a chaotic end to the window for Monaco. Two earlier bids for Camara had already been rejected, the club holding firm on a high valuation before softening their stance late on. The picture grew even more tangled as doubts emerged over Folarin Balogun’s proposed switch to Everton.

For a spell, it seemed simple: Monaco needed a major sale and, in France, the expectation was that Balogun would be the one to go. A source at the club had already signalled it would take a “substantial fee” to prise Camara away, and the hierarchy were thought to favour cashing in on the American forward instead.

Then the market whiplash hit. When Balogun’s move to Everton appeared to be back on, Monaco looked ready to green-light Camara’s departure to Chelsea. By the time the dust settled, nothing had moved. Both Balogun and Camara stayed put in the principality.

“There was a possibility I could leave,” Camara said ahead of Monaco’s game against Strasbourg on Saturday. “It didn’t go through at the last minute and that’s part of football. I’ve turned the page and am focusing on the season.”

Monaco have started that season at full tilt. Three wins from three in Ligue 1 put them second behind Rennes heading into the weekend, with a game in hand and early momentum on their side.

Camara, a Senegal international, expects to play a central role in keeping that surge going.

“I can help the team a lot,” he said. “Football moves fast. Maybe other opportunities will come along. But for now, I’m staying focused on the season with Monaco.”

The transfer that never was may yet return in another window. For the moment, Camara’s future lies in red and white, in a Monaco side already showing they might not need any departures to make this campaign a significant one.
