Lamine Camara Focuses on Monaco After Chelsea Transfer Collapse

Lamine Camara insists he has “turned the page” on a collapsed £47.1m move to Chelsea and is locking back in on Monaco’s Ligue 1 campaign.

The 22-year-old midfielder had gone as far as completing a medical before the transfer broke down in the frantic final hours of the window. What looked like a done deal suddenly evaporated.

Monaco had already knocked back two offers for the Senegal international. As the deadline loomed and the market grew more chaotic, they softened their stance and lowered the asking price, with club finances under scrutiny and the need for at least one major sale widely flagged in France.

The situation became tangled with Folarin Balogun’s proposed move to Everton. When that transfer appeared to be stalling, Camara’s exit looked increasingly likely. Once Balogun’s switch seemed back on course, Monaco appeared to cool on the idea of losing Camara as well.

In the end, the twist was brutal for all involved: both Balogun and Camara stayed put.

“There was a possibility I could leave,” Camara said ahead of Monaco’s game against Strasbourg on Saturday. “It didn’t go through at the last minute and that’s part of football. I’ve turned the page and am focusing on the season.”

Inside the club, the message had long been clear. A senior source had indicated it would take a “substantial fee” to prise Camara away, even with pressure to cash in on at least one asset. The preference, those close to the situation said, was always to move Balogun on first.

Instead, Monaco emerge from the window with both players still on the books and momentum on the pitch. They have opened the Ligue 1 season with three wins from three and went into the weekend second behind Rennes, with a game in hand.

That start has sharpened Camara’s focus.

“I can help the team a lot,” he said. “Football moves fast. Maybe other opportunities will come along. But for now, I’m staying focused on the season with Monaco.”

The transfer door has closed for now. The question is whether Camara’s performances in a winning Monaco side will blow it wide open again when the market reopens.
