Lazio's Mentality and Desire Shine in Comeback Win
Gennaro Gattuso hailed Lazio’s “mentality and desire” after they roared back to beat Udinese 2-1, then immediately turned his gaze to an emotional reunion with Milan.
At the Olimpico, the night threatened to follow a familiar, gloomy script. Jesper Karlstrom struck in the second half to put Udinese in front, and the tension inside the stadium thickened. Lazio were coming off a bruising Coppa Italia exit to Mantova in August; another setback would have cut deep.
Instead, the response was sharp and defiant. Davide Frattesi dragged the Biancocelesti level, Albert Gudmundsson completed the turnaround, and Gattuso saw exactly what he wanted from a side still learning to play in his image.
“The mentality and the desire,” he told Sky Sport, via TuttoMercatoWeb, when asked what had made the difference. “We dismantled everything compared to last year, when there was a master of the 4-3-3, and we are trying to do something different. The lads are doing things well. What we are trying to propose is not easy, but the team is alive.”
Alive – and clearly listening. Since stepping in, Gattuso has tried to rip up the old blueprint and impose a more aggressive, demanding style. The defeat to Mantova had raised early questions. This comeback, carved out under pressure, felt like an answer.
Gattuso’s own touchline energy has not dimmed. In mid-August, during that Coppa Italia loss at the Olimpico, he cut a frustrated figure as Lazio stumbled. Against Udinese, the performance carried more of his trademark edge: intensity without losing structure, personality without losing shape.
Gratitude for Lotito and Fabiani
The coach did not limit his praise to the dressing room. He went out of his way to underline the work done above him in the club’s hierarchy, highlighting a transfer window that, in his words, looked unlikely on paper at the start.
“With great difficulty, we made a transfer market that we didn’t think we could make,” Gattuso said. “I have to thank both him and Fabiani; they deserve enormous credit for the players who arrived.”
President Claudio Lotito and sporting director Angelo Fabiani pushed through a campaign that has given Gattuso the tools to remodel the side. The pieces are still settling, but results like this help accelerate the process and buy time for a new idea to take root.
Milan on the horizon
Now comes a very different kind of test. Milan. His Milan.
Gattuso spent 12 years in the Rossoneri shirt, a symbol of the club’s snarling competitive spirit in midfield. The bond runs far deeper than a line on his CV.
“As a child, I remember the parade after the Steaua game with my father. For me, it was always an honour and a dream that lasted 12 years,” he recalled.
The affection is intact. The job has changed. That is the line he walks this week.
“All the affection and joy cannot be forgotten, but today I have another job and on Sunday I hope to take points from the team of my heart.”
Lazio’s comeback against Udinese showed a team willing to suffer, adjust and bite back. On Sunday, in a stadium and against a club that shaped him, we will see how far that new mentality really stretches.
