Lazio Considers Icardi and Bissouma as Free-Agent Options
Lazio’s transfer window has officially closed, but the market has not. In Rome, the hunt has simply changed shape.
With the free-agent pool still open for business, the Biancocelesti are studying two high-profile names: Mauro Icardi and Yves Bissouma. Big reputations, different needs, and a coach who has his own ideas.
Lotito tempted by Icardi, Gattuso hits the brakes
Lazio have already dipped into the list of unattached players, snapping up Portuguese defender Diogo Leite on a free. Even after that deal, two spots remain open on their official Serie A squad list, created by the omissions of Patric and Luca Pellegrini.
That flexibility has kept president Claudio Lotito looking around. According to Corriere dello Sport, via TuttoMercatoWeb, he remains intrigued by the possibility of bringing in Icardi, who is still without a club after his departure from Galatasaray. A proven finisher, a marquee name, and available for nothing in transfer fees – on paper, it is the kind of opportunity Lotito rarely ignores.
On the touchline, though, the enthusiasm cools. Gennaro Gattuso is not pushing for the deal. Far from it.
The Lazio coach went into the summer with a clear request: a more mobile central striker to spearhead his system. That demand led to the late arrival of Andrea Pinamonti, signed specifically to give the attack the running and pressing profile Gattuso wants up front.
In that context, Icardi looks more like a luxury than a necessity. A finisher in the box, not a runner in the channels. For Gattuso, the priority is to get Pinamonti fully match-fit and integrated, not to reshape the pecking order for a striker who does not perfectly fit his tactical blueprint. So, while Lotito keeps the door ajar, the bench is not clamouring for the Argentine.
Bissouma emerges as midfield solution
While the Icardi debate simmers, another name has entered the frame: Yves Bissouma.
The former Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton midfielder has been identified as a potential reinforcement for a department hit by recent injuries. His profile is different, his role more obviously functional. Energy, ball-winning, and depth in the middle of the pitch are exactly the kind of attributes that can plug gaps when absences mount.
For a squad that has already used one free-agent slot on defence and is trying to manage its balance across all departments, Bissouma represents a targeted solution rather than a headline gamble.
Time on Lazio’s side
Despite the open squad spots and the availability of both players, Lazio are not rushing. The club intend to take their time, weigh the physical condition, cost, and tactical fit of each option, and decide only if the move genuinely improves Gattuso’s hand.
The window drama may be over, but in Formello the real question lingers: will Lazio roll the dice on star power, or back the coach’s blueprint and keep their powder dry for later in the season?
