Lee Clark Resigns as Hartlepool Head Coach After Worthing Defeat

Lee Clark walked away from Hartlepool United on Saturday, resigning as head coach with immediate effect after a bruising 3-1 home defeat to Worthing.

The loss, greeted by open anger from the stands, was Hartlepool’s third in a row and their sixth in seven games. By the time the afternoon’s National League fixtures kicked off elsewhere, Pools had slumped to 18th, the early optimism of the summer feeling a long way off.

Clark, appointed in the close season after a short stint with Rotherham United at the end of last term, faced chants calling for his dismissal during the game as Worthing exposed a side badly out of form and short on confidence.

He did not wait to be pushed.

"I resign from my position with immediate effect," the former Newcastle, Sunderland and Fulham midfielder told BBC Radio Tees, confirming his decision shortly after the final whistle.

"I wanted to give this club and the fans something to be proud of, what they deserve, but I haven't been able to do that unfortunately."

Clark arrived with a solid managerial CV, having previously led Huddersfield Town and Birmingham City, and spoke often of the scale and potential of the club. That ambition came through again as he reflected on his exit.

"I was excited to take the job and I wanted to be the man to get them back to where they need to be and deserve to be, but it hasn't worked out," he said.

Hartlepool’s off-field story only sharpens the sense of frustration. The club were taken over in January by American businessman Landon Smith, whose arrival was framed as a fresh start and a chance to end their four-year stay in the National League.

Instead, the churn in the dugout continues. With Clark gone, Pools now begin the hunt for their ninth permanent manager or head coach since dropping out of the English Football League.

The next appointment will not just be about style or slogans. It will be about survival, stability, and finally turning that promise into progress.
