Leeds United Targeting Juventus Striker Lois Openda

Leeds United are pushing to the front of the queue for Juventus striker Lois Openda, with the Yorkshire club increasingly confident they can beat Coventry City to his signature this summer.

The deal will not be cheap. It will not be simple either. But Leeds believe he is the centre-forward to change the temperature of their attack.

Leeds sense an opportunity

Juventus are ready to cut their losses. Openda, 26, arrived in Turin on loan from RB Leipzig last summer carrying heavy expectations and a hefty reputation after 41 goals and 14 assists in 90 appearances for the Bundesliga side. Serie A has told a very different story.

Thirty-seven games. Two goals. A player who once bullied defences in Germany has found himself lost in the tactical grind of Italian football, and Juventus have already decided to move him on once his switch from Leipzig becomes permanent.

That clause, worth around £35 million, is about to be triggered, but the club hierarchy are already hunting for an exit route. They want him off the books before next season begins.

Leeds see a window. They are prepared, according to sources, to make a “very expensive” move and offer “big wages” to get Openda into the Premier League. The preferred structure is clear: a loan-to-buy agreement, not an immediate all-in gamble.

Loan now, commit later

Leeds’ stance is firm. They will not match Juventus’ £35m outlay. Any negotiation will hinge on the size of the purchase clause and the timing of when it kicks in.

The Elland Road recruitment team want to push the obligation to buy further down the line, stretching their budget across several positions rather than throwing it all at one striker. They are looking for flexibility: Openda on loan now, the big decision on a permanent fee later.

Juventus, naturally, want to recoup as much as possible. That tension will define the talks. How much of that £35m can they claw back? How far will Leeds push the price down? That is where the deal will be won or lost.

Coventry in the race, but behind

Coventry City have stepped into the chase and are showing strong interest of their own. For now, though, they sit behind Leeds in the pecking order.

Leeds can offer the Premier League platform and the financial muscle Juventus are looking for. Coventry can offer opportunity and a central role, but not the same scale of wages or exposure. At this stage, the feeling around the deal is that Leeds are better placed to get it done.

A striker to lift the attack

Leeds have made the signing of a new striker a clear priority in recent months. They want high-calibre support for Dominic Calvert-Lewin at the top end of the pitch, a partner or alternative who can drag the team higher up the table next season.

Inside Elland Road, there is no doubt about Openda’s underlying quality. His numbers in Germany are seen as proof of what he can be when the system suits him. The view is simple: his struggles in Serie A say more about the fit than the footballer.

Daniel Farke is understood to be an admirer of Openda’s movement and versatility. He sees a forward who can run channels, stretch defences, and thrive in a more expansive, front-foot style. The kind of style the Premier League offers and Leeds want to lean into.

The belief is that in a more open game, with more space to attack and fewer tactical shackles, Openda can rediscover the form that made him one of Europe’s most dangerous forwards at Leipzig.

High stakes on both sides

For Juventus, this is about damage limitation. For Leeds, it is about calculated risk.

Back in April, it emerged that Leeds were already exploring a reduced-price, loan-to-buy swoop. That strategy has not changed. The club want to protect themselves financially while still making a bold move for a player whose ceiling remains high.

Juventus will push back. Leeds will hold their line. Somewhere between those positions lies a number that could define both Openda’s next chapter and Leeds’ attacking future.

If they find it, a once-prolific Bundesliga striker could soon be leading the line in white, with Coventry watching on and wondering what might have been.
