Lion City Sailors Sacks Coach Jesus Casas Before SPL Season Start
The Lion City Sailors have stunned Singapore football by sacking head coach Jesus Casas just five days before the new Singapore Premier League (SPL) season kicks off.
The club announced the decision on Sept 1 with a brief, 30-word statement on Facebook, confirming that they had parted ways with the Spaniard and that assistant coach Varo Moreno will take charge of the first team until further notice.
No explanation. No farewell quotes. Just a clean break and a looming season opener against Tampines Rovers.
From long-term deal to abrupt exit
Casas’ departure is striking not just for its timing but for the scale of the original commitment. Appointed only in February, the former Iraq coach had signed a contract running all the way to the end of the 2027-28 season with the reigning SPL champions.
The 52-year-old arrived with a substantial résumé. Before his Iraq stint, he had worked extensively with youth teams in Spain and served as assistant manager to Javi Gracia at English side Watford in early 2018.
He had also been on the radar in Singapore even before joining the Sailors, making the shortlist for the national team job that eventually went to Gavin Lee.
His name has continued to circulate at international level. The Korea Herald recently reported that Casas had applied for the vacant South Korea national team role and was one of three candidates on the final shortlist.
Another swift change in the Sailors’ dugout
Casas himself had been a replacement. He took over from Serbian coach Aleksandar Rankovic, who was dismissed on Feb 6, a day after the Sailors’ 2-0 home defeat by Cambodian side Svay Rieng in the Asean Club Championship.
Rankovic’s record at the club was far from disastrous. Across a 2½-year spell, he delivered an SPL title and led the Sailors to the Singapore Cup for the third time. But he also presided over a group-stage exit in Asian Champions League Two, a stark contrast to the club’s dream run to the final in the previous campaign.
Ambition has always driven the Sailors’ decisions. Patience, less so.
Tampines clash looms large
The timing of Casas’ exit throws extra intrigue on the season curtain-raiser. On May 3, the Sailors secured back-to-back SPL titles for the first time in their history with a tense 0-0 draw against Tampines Rovers, edging the Stags by just two points over the course of the season.
The two sides meet again on Sept 6 in the Community Shield at Jalan Besar Stadium at 7.30pm, the traditional opener for the 2026-27 campaign. This time, Tampines face a Sailors side led by an interim coach and clouded by off-pitch upheaval.
Four days later, the champions begin their title defence in earnest, hosting Hougang United at Bishan Stadium on Sept 12, also at 7.30pm.
The fixtures are set. The trophies are on the line. But with another coach gone and a long season ahead, the real question now hangs over the Sailors’ bench: who will be the one trusted to lead this star-studded project for more than just a few turbulent months?
