Liverpool's Changing Guard: Bajcetic and Ramsay's Future
Liverpool’s changing of the guard is gathering pace – and for Stefan Bajcetic and Calvin Ramsay, Anfield now looks more like a memory than a home.
Bajcetic edging towards Celta Vigo return
Liverpool plucked Bajcetic out of Celta Vigo’s academy in December 2020, paying just £224,000 to bring the then 16-year-old to Merseyside. By 2022/23, it looked a masterstroke. The Spain Under-21 midfielder made 19 appearances under Jurgen Klopp, earned a new long-term deal and briefly appeared to be a cornerstone of Liverpool’s next midfield.
That rise stalled brutally.
A string of niggling injuries checked his momentum, and the club quietly shifted him onto the loan carousel. Last season he split his time between Red Bull Salzburg and Las Palmas, searching for rhythm, fitness and a foothold in senior football.
He has not played a competitive game for Liverpool since May 2024. Now, at 21, the conversation has changed from pathway to exit strategy.
In Spain, Faro de Vigo report that Bajcetic has become a leading target for his former club. Talks have taken place over a return to Celta Vigo, six years after he left their academy for Anfield. The tone from Galicia is clear: they “want him back” and believe he is “closer than ever to returning home”.
There is a catch.
Celta, according to the same report, need Liverpool to terminate the final year of his contract to make the deal work. No fee, no haggling, just a clean break and a free transfer back to LaLiga.
Liverpool are understood to be weighing it up. The likelihood of banking a significant fee is slim, given his injury record and lack of recent game time. A compromise is on the table: cut him loose now, but protect the upside with a future sell-on clause if his career takes off in Spain.
For a player once tipped to anchor Liverpool’s midfield for a decade, it would be a quiet, almost ruthless ending. For Bajcetic, it could be the reset he badly needs.
Ramsay’s fifth loan spells the end
On the other side of the squad, another once-hopeful project has effectively reached its conclusion.
Calvin Ramsay arrived from Aberdeen in June 2022 for £4.2m, signed to push and cover Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back. The idea was bold. The reality has been brutal.
Ramsay has managed just four senior appearances for Liverpool. Injuries, form and the sheer level required to dislodge Alexander-Arnold combined to shut the door almost as soon as it opened.
The solution has been repetition: loan after loan. Preston, Bolton, Wigan, then Kilmarnock last season. Across those four spells he has only managed 26 appearances, with his most productive run the 12 games he put together at Wigan in the 2024/25 campaign.
Now comes loan number five – and likely the last act of his Liverpool story.
The club have confirmed that the 21-year-old has joined St Mirren on a season-long loan. With his contract at Anfield entering its final year, the move all but signals the end of his time on Merseyside.
St Mirren’s deal does not include an option to buy, at least not yet. That could change if Ramsay finally strings together the form and fitness that first drew Liverpool’s scouts to him. For now, it is a lifeline: a chance to rebuild in Paisley after a hugely disappointing spell in England.
As Andoni Iraola trims and reshapes this Liverpool squad, these are the hard edges of a reset. Prospects once framed as the future are being moved on, quietly and decisively. The question now is simple: who grasps their second chance away from Anfield, and who fades from view?
