Arsenal circle as talks stall
French journalist Fabrice Hawkins reported last week that all parties expected a deal to be struck, clearing the way for the 23-year-old to become a Liverpool player. That optimism has now been tempered by a warning from within the Premier League.

Arsenal are reportedly being kept fully briefed on the situation and, despite Barcola already giving the green light to a move to Merseyside, it’s claimed he could be tempted by a switch to north London if Liverpool cannot close the deal.
One source told CaughtOffside: “Liverpool and PSG still have no agreement on Barcola; there’s a significant gap in valuation. Arsenal haven’t completely gone away and could aggressively enter the conversation again if it becomes clear this deal is really stalling.”
The threat is no longer theoretical. It’s live.
A gamble Liverpool may have to take
Right now, Liverpool remain Barcola’s preferred destination. That matters. But every day that passes without a breakthrough gives Arsenal more room to manoeuvre and more time to convince.
Liverpool’s hierarchy will be wary of being dragged into a bidding war or paying what they consider an inflated fee. Yet the equation is brutally simple: if an extra £10m is the difference between signing a long-term attacking cornerstone and watching him line up for a direct rival, how much is too much?
Andoni Iraola heads into today’s Premier League opener against Newcastle with Federico Chiesa as his only natural right winger. Barcola is predominantly a left-sided forward, but his track record shows he can operate across the front line at the highest level. For a manager who wants fluid, interchangeable movement in attack, that kind of versatility is gold.
Barcola’s situation in Paris only sharpens the picture. The 23-year-old has been frozen out amid the uncertainty over his future, left on the outside while the clubs haggle over millions. It’s an uncomfortable spot for the player, but it should embolden Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes.
