Liverpool's Pursuit of Bradley Barcola: Transfer Talks Intensify
Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola is very much alive, with senior figures at Paris Saint-Germain and Anfield locked in direct talks over a deal that both sides know will be expensive – just not €170m expensive.
With Mohamed Salah gone to Trabzonspor and the clock ticking towards the transfer deadline, Liverpool’s rebuild in the wide areas has become the defining storyline of their window. Victor Munoz has already arrived from Osasuna, but that was only the first piece. The club want two wingers. They have walked away from Yan Diomande after it became clear he preferred a different move. Now the spotlight has swung firmly onto Barcola.
Direct lines, big numbers
Fabrizio Romano has underlined that the negotiation is not the usual step-by-step saga of bids and rejections played out in public. This one is being driven at the very top.
On his YouTube channel, Romano stressed that the much-discussed €170m figure is nowhere near reality. People inside the industry, he said, never believed PSG would command that kind of fee, even though Barcola will still cost “a big amount of money”.
That gap between fantasy numbers and serious money has shaped how the clubs are operating. Rather than feeding the usual drip of “official bid” updates, Liverpool and PSG are talking directly, day after day, with owners and sporting directors leading the conversation. No intermediaries leaking every twist. No public auctions. Just two heavyweight clubs trying to find the point where both can say yes.
What is clear, Romano insists, is Liverpool’s intent. The deal, in his words, is “alive” and Barcola is a transfer they “want to complete in the next few days”. The expectation around Anfield is that Liverpool will “go very strong” to get it done.
The final hurdle is predictable enough: agreement on the fee. Until PSG sign off, there is no “Here we go”, no green light. But the direction of travel is obvious.
PSG braced for exit
The mood in Paris matches that sense of movement. Ben Jacobs reports that PSG insiders now expect Barcola to leave before the window closes, with talks with Liverpool ongoing.
Inside the French champions, this is no longer framed as a hypothetical. It is something they are preparing for. The question is not whether Barcola goes, but when the numbers line up.
For Liverpool, that timing matters. The club are not only chasing Barcola for the left flank, they are juggling a second major decision in attack.
Gakpo’s future twists the plot
Liverpool’s winger strategy does not end with Barcola. The plan, Romano says, is to bring in another wide player if Cody Gakpo leaves – and there is no shortage of interest.
Tottenham are pushing to sign Gakpo. Manchester City are also keen, though, as of Monday night, Jacobs reports they have yet to make a direct approach to Liverpool.
That potential domino shapes everything. If Gakpo moves to Spurs or City, Liverpool will not just be replacing Salah and adding Barcola. They will need one more attacker on top of that. It is why they have already tested the water with two bids for Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh as a right-sided option, even as they decide whether to persist with that pursuit or walk away.
So Liverpool stand at a crossroads in the final days of the window. A marquee push for Barcola. A decision to make on Minteh. A looming call on Gakpo’s future with two Premier League rivals circling.
If all of this breaks their way, Anfield’s front line could look radically different – and frighteningly fresh – by the time the deadline slams shut. If it doesn’t, how much firepower will they have let slip through their fingers?
