Liverpool Enters New Financial Era with Bezos Consortium
Liverpool have taken a dramatic step into a new financial era, with a heavyweight consortium featuring Amazon founder Jeff Bezos buying close to 40% of the club from Fenway Sports Group (FSG).
The deal, struck with 1892 Holdings, had initially been reported as a purchase of roughly a third of the club. The figure is in fact about 38%, as first revealed by The Athletic. It is a minority stake on paper, but one that carries serious weight and a clear route to more power.
Crucially, the agreement includes an option for the consortium to move to a controlling stake within the next 12 months. There is no binding obligation to do so, but the pathway is there if both sides decide to push ahead.
FSG confirmed on Friday that it had entered into a “definitive agreement” for what it called a “strategic minority investment” from 1892 Holdings.
The name is no accident: it nods directly to Liverpool’s founding year and signals an attempt to align new money with old tradition.
The group is led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia, a millionaire with deep experience in football boardrooms. Alongside him stand Bezos and billionaire Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, two of the most recognisable figures in global tech and investment.
Bhatia is set to become Liverpool’s vice-chairman and will take a seat on an expanded board, subject to regulatory approval. His arrival marks a notable shift in influence at Anfield, with FSG bringing in a partner that carries both capital and clout.
The son-in-law of Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, Bhatia spent 18 years as a director and co-owner at Queens Park Rangers before giving up his stake last month. That exit now looks like the prelude to a far bigger stage.
Liverpool, already a global powerhouse on the pitch and commercially, now find themselves backed by a consortium with the resources to match any project in world football. The question is no longer whether the club has the muscle to compete off the field, but how far this new alliance will be prepared to go.
