Liverpool Should Consider Intervening in Arsenal Midfielder Myles Lewis-Skelly's Transfer Talks

Liverpool have been encouraged to step into the transfer race for the young and adaptable Arsenal midfielder, Myles Lewis-Skelly. The 19-year-old talent has recently been presented to Premier League rivals Chelsea and Manchester United, but there’s growing opinion that he could be an ideal candidate to challenge for a spot on Liverpool’s left side of defense.

Arsenal's Interest in Selling Domestically

Reports from talkSPORT suggest that Arsenal have made Lewis-Skelly available to both Man Utd and Chelsea. This move comes as Arsenal look to recover funds after their recent £75 million signing of Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle. Lewis-Skelly's future at the club looks uncertain now, with midfield spots becoming crowded by new signings such as Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, and Mikel Merino.

Support for Liverpool to Join the Chase

Darragh MacAnthony, owner of Peterborough United, has voiced support for Liverpool to pursue Lewis-Skelly, citing the need to increase competition for Milos Kerkez. MacAnthony said, "I love him, I think he’s a great, young player. Why has he not been offered to Liverpool? Someone asked what he’s worth; I said anywhere from £40-60 million for a player of that age who is English."

Competition at Left-Back

Kerkez is expected to be Liverpool’s first choice left-back this season ahead of Kostas Tsimikas, who is eager to fight for his place. MacAnthony believes Lewis-Skelly would be a valuable addition. When asked about bringing him to Anfield, he responded: "All day long. We need competition for our left-back. No disrespect to Tsimikas, but not for me. And, Lewis-Skelly can also play in midfield — we’ve seen that before." When pressed on Lewis-Skelly’s strongest position, he confirmed it was midfield, adding, "Liverpool are crying out for that kind of player who has defensive skills but also technical attacking ability."

The Player's Perspective

The prospect of being offered to other clubs has raised questions about how Lewis-Skelly feels. He started five Premier League matches last season and is a product of Arsenal’s academy. Presenter Max Scott asked MacAnthony if the player might feel frustrated, considering his progress and connection to the club. MacAnthony acknowledged the harsh realities of football business but seemed to understand potential player emotions.

What Lies Ahead?

Manchester United and Chelsea must decide whether to take formal steps toward signing Lewis-Skelly, whose asking price is estimated around £45 million before the transfer window shuts. Meanwhile, Liverpool could follow MacAnthony's advice and enter talks to strengthen their squad for the season ahead as Michael Carrick continues evaluating defensive targets.
