Liverpool Eye Matias Fernandez-Pardo as Newcastle Pushes for Winger
Liverpool have moved into the race for Lille winger Matias Fernandez-Pardo, making enquiries over a late-window deal as Newcastle United push to bring the Belgian international to St James’ Park.
A well-placed source on X (formerly Twitter) claims Liverpool made contact on Wednesday, raising the prospect of a classic late hijack just as Newcastle appeared to be edging into position for the 21-year-old.
This is not a routine wide-man punt. Not for Liverpool, and not at this stage of the summer.
More than just a winger
Fernandez-Pardo has built his reputation operating from the flanks for Gent and Lille, but his career map tells a broader story. He has logged significant minutes both out wide and through the middle, offering managers the luxury of shuffling him across the frontline without losing structure.
That versatility lands squarely in Liverpool’s current needs. With the club braced to lean heavily on Hugo Ekitike for long stretches of the 2026/27 campaign, extra cover through the middle is no longer a luxury; it is a necessity. A player who can start on the wing, then slide into the striker role when required, suddenly looks very attractive.
The pressure on recruitment has been obvious in recent weeks. Liverpool have found Premier League clubs reluctant to part with wide forwards, and the market has turned stubborn. Fernandez-Pardo, based in Ligue 1 and still early in his career arc, offers a different route.
Creator, not killer
The numbers from France paint a clear picture. Fernandez-Pardo is not a penalty-box predator in the mould of Alexander Isak. He does not profile as a cold, ruthless finisher who guarantees 20 goals a season.
What he does bring is service.
His Ligue 1 output for Lille suggests a player who can carry the ball, link play and supply chances from the flanks, particularly for a central striker. For a side looking to maximise a focal point like Isak at Newcastle, or to feed Ekitike at Liverpool, that kind of facilitator has real value.
The question for Liverpool is where they see him living on the pitch.
The right fit – or the wrong flank?
If the plan is to use Fernandez-Pardo primarily on the left, the move only truly adds up if the club believe he can be just as dangerous on the right. Liverpool’s wide roles are too specific, too demanding, for a signing who locks them into one side only.
That tactical detail matters even more with another storyline running in the background: ongoing talks with PSG for Bradley Barcola. If Liverpool close a deal for Barcola, the need for another predominantly left-sided option drops sharply.
So any serious push for Fernandez-Pardo would hint at one of two things: either the club see him as a genuine two-flank solution who can also cover centrally, or they are prepared to pivot away from the Barcola pursuit.
For now, the picture is clear enough. Newcastle want him. Liverpool have picked up the phone. The window is closing fast.
