Liverpool's Pursuit of Yan Diomande: A Transfer Saga Intensifies

Liverpool’s pursuit of Yan Diomande is turning into a transfer saga with teeth.

The club remain convinced they will eventually drag the RB Leipzig winger to Anfield, even after a colossal opening offer worth around €100m (£87m, $116m) was knocked back. But while Liverpool prepare a second, far more aggressive bid, the mood in the player’s camp is shifting from excitement to irritation.

Frustration grows in Diomande camp

Diomande has been identified as Liverpool’s clear first-choice heir to Mohamed Salah, the man tasked with filling the void left by the Egyptian after nine glittering seasons on Merseyside. The plan is simple; the execution is anything but.

Leipzig have made life difficult. The Bundesliga club rejected Liverpool’s first proposal and are ready to push the price to a level that could surpass the fee that took Ousmane Dembele to Barcelona in 2017 – a potential league-record sale.

That hardline stance is testing patience on the player’s side. Journalist Lewis Steele, speaking on his YouTube channel, outlined the growing annoyance from Diomande’s entourage over the drawn-out nature of talks.

“I think there’s a little bit of frustration on the player’s side from what I’ve heard that it’s maybe taking a little bit longer than some people may have anticipated,” Steele said. “I’m talking about his camp.

“Maybe they thought it was going to go a bit quicker, but now they’re sort of resigned to the fact it might drag on after the World Cup, but they accept it.

“But also, you never know. Liverpool could just pull their finger out, and it’d be done in the next day or two.”

That last line cuts to the heart of it. From the outside, this is starting to look less like a simple negotiation and more like a test of how badly Fenway Sports Group really want their man.

Liverpool prepare ‘very aggressive’ second bid

Liverpool, for their part, are not acting like a club short of ambition or cash.

After spending around £440m (€505m, $600m) on new players last summer, the owners are again ready to arm new head coach Andoni Iraola with serious funds. The rebuild is broad as well as bold: another winger, possibly a new striker, a central midfielder and multiple defensive reinforcements are all on the agenda, with both full-back positions under scrutiny.

But Diomande sits above all of that. He is the headline act they want.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has detailed how Liverpool are working relentlessly behind the scenes, not just with Leipzig but on what he calls “the player side” of the deal.

“I think the player side of this deal is still a bit underrated in terms of the media,” Romano said. “It’s always the talk about the bid, the new bid, the next bid, but I believe that Liverpool are doing excellent work on the player side in order to get the green light and to have Diomande telling Leipzig, ‘let me go to Liverpool.’

“So that’s what they’re doing, and that’s why I believe there is confidence at the club to get it done.”

Liverpool’s charm offensive is not new. Club officials have been in near-daily contact with Diomande’s camp since December, laying the groundwork for a summer move. Now comes the decisive phase.

Romano confirmed that Liverpool will return to the table with a significantly improved offer.

“Liverpool will be back at the table for negotiation. Liverpool are pushing on the player side, so what I can tell you behind the scenes is that Liverpool are trying their best in terms of a financial proposal to get the player on their side 100%,” he explained.

“RB Leipzig keep insisting they want to continue with Diomande. They believe that keeping Diomande is a smart decision, giving him a big salary, a new contract, and then next summer he can decide whatever he wants after playing Champions League football with Leipzig.

“Liverpool will be very aggressive. Liverpool will bid more than €100m.

“It’s going to be a big proposal coming from Liverpool in order to try and change the situation. Liverpool are working on the player side in terms of contract proposal, salary… they’re working hard to get this deal done for Yan Diomande.”

So the lines are clear. Leipzig want to keep their star, reward him with a new deal and sell from a position of even greater strength next year. Liverpool want to smash through that plan now, with money and persuasion.

Alternatives in the background

Liverpool know how fragile even the best-laid transfer plans can be. If Leipzig hold firm and Diomande stays put, the club have other names ready.

A Brighton attacker is among those on the list, while Romano has also reported that Iraola holds a strong “love” for a PSG star who could be available this summer for around £78m (€90m, $102m).

Those options exist, but they remain secondary. Every signal from Anfield points the same way: Diomande is the priority, the player they see as central to the next phase of the post-Salah era.

The money is there. The intent is there. The player’s camp is restless, and Leipzig are braced. Now the question is simple: how far are Liverpool willing to go to make this their defining move of the summer?
