Liverpool's Search for Mohamed Salah's Replacement: Barcola Emerges as Top Option

Liverpool are bracing for life without Mohamed Salah, and the search for the next marquee winger has taken a sharp turn towards Paris.

With top target Yan Diomande edging closer to Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool have elevated Bradley Barcola to the top tier of their alternative options – a 23-year-old whose talent is clear, but whose patience in Paris is wearing thin.

Diomande drifting towards Paris

Liverpool had made Diomande their priority for the wide role, identifying the 19-year-old Ivory Coast international as a long-term, high-ceiling investment. They pushed hard, but only up to a point.

RB Leipzig want significantly more than the £86m Liverpool were willing to put on the table. The Premier League club have refused to move beyond that figure, and that stance has opened the door for PSG.

The French and European champions are now in direct negotiations with Leipzig after Diomande made clear he prefers a move to Paris. Luis Enrique’s side already have a contract agreed with the winger through to 2031; the only hurdle left is agreement between the clubs. As things stand, PSG have a clear run.

Liverpool, meanwhile, cannot afford to stand still.

Barcola: talented, restless, and on the radar

As Diomande slips away, Barcola has moved into sharp focus at Anfield.

Liverpool have already brought in Victor Munoz from Osasuna as part of a wider rebuild of their attacking options, but replacing Salah is not a one-signing job. They are exploring multiple profiles for the role, and Barcola is high among them.

His situation at PSG is delicate. The winger has grown frustrated at being overlooked for the biggest games, most notably the Champions League final win over Arsenal. For a player of his age and ambition, watching from the fringes on nights like that leaves a mark.

Sky Sports News reported earlier this month that Barcola could push for a move if he returns from the World Cup with France still unhappy with his status. PSG’s stance is firm but pragmatic: they would like to keep him, yet they will not block an exit if he wants to go and a club meets their valuation. There will be no discount. No cut-price deal.

Barcola has two years left on his current contract. That puts PSG at a crossroads. If he refuses to extend, this summer becomes the ideal window to cash in at maximum value, rather than risk a depreciating asset running down his deal.

Liverpool are not alone in their admiration. Arsenal have monitored Barcola as well, weighing him up for their left flank. But their priority in that position currently appears to be Morgan Rogers at Aston Villa, which could leave Liverpool with a clearer path if they choose to move decisively.

Anfield rebuild gathers pace

All of this unfolds against a backdrop of significant change on Merseyside.

Liverpool have already committed serious money to reshape the squad: Jeremy Jacquet has arrived from Rennes for £60m, with Munoz following from Osasuna for £34.5m. At the same time, familiar faces have gone.

Andy Robertson has joined Tottenham on a free transfer. Ibrahima Konate has departed for Real Madrid, also on a free. Salah has been released. Rhys Williams has left as well.

Those exits underline the scale of the transition. This is not a minor refresh. It is a retooling of the core.

Which is why the next wide signing matters so much. Liverpool are not just buying goals and assists; they are buying a new attacking reference point for the next era.

Diomande looks bound for Paris. Barcola, unsettled yet coveted, stands at a career crossroads. The question now is whether Liverpool turn admiration into action – and whether the winger sees Anfield as the stage to finally step out of the shadows.
