Liverpool Sign Víctor Muñoz for £34.5m as Iraola Era Begins

Liverpool have moved quickly and decisively for Víctor Muñoz, triggering the Osasuna winger’s £34.5m release clause to make him the first signing of Andoni Iraola’s reign at Anfield.

The 22-year-old will sign a six-year contract after completing a medical on Wednesday in Atlanta, where he is currently with Spain’s World Cup squad. Liverpool accelerated the move once Iraola was confirmed, with the new head coach pushing hard to bring in his compatriot.

Iraola’s first call

This is very much an Iraola signing. The former Athletic Bilbao stalwart has kept a close eye on La Liga since moving into management, and Muñoz has stood out to him for some time. Once in the door at Liverpool, Iraola made it clear he wanted the Osasuna attacker as part of his rebuild.

Liverpool had tracked Muñoz for an “extensive period”, but the appointment of Iraola turned long-term interest into immediate action. Newcastle were beaten to the punch, despite strong advances, while Manchester United and Bayer Leverkusen also monitored the situation.

Barcelona and Real Madrid, where Muñoz came through at youth level, had him on their summer shortlists but ultimately chose to pursue other targets. Liverpool stepped into that gap with a firm offer and the financial clarity of a release clause.

Pace, versatility and a new attacking profile

Muñoz arrives as a flexible piece in Liverpool’s evolving forward line. He can operate on either flank or through the middle as a central striker, a profile that fits neatly with Iraola’s high-intensity, interchangeable front three.

Speed is his calling card. Liverpool want to inject more raw pace into the squad this summer and see Muñoz as a cornerstone of that strategy, a player who can stretch games vertically and press aggressively from the front.

At international level, he is only just beginning. Muñoz has two caps for Spain, making his debut in March and scoring against Serbia. He was an unused substitute in the draw with Cape Verde, but his inclusion in the World Cup squad underlines how quickly his reputation has grown.

Chiesa question remains

Muñoz’s arrival will not automatically push Federico Chiesa towards the exit. The Italian, used only in fits and starts under Arne Slot, may find Iraola’s more direct, transitional style better suited to his game.

Chiesa, though, wants minutes. He remains open to leaving if his role does not expand, and Muñoz’s signing adds another layer of competition in the wide areas.

For now, the headline is clear: Iraola has his first recruit, Liverpool have landed one of Europe’s most coveted young wide forwards, and a new, faster version of their attack is starting to take shape.
